Now I know where my parents were coming from when they said, "They're remaking The Thing? In the 80's? The original was a classic! How the fuck could they do this?"

Rovin - 2011-09-21

Yeah, but your parents got a better film. It's doubtful we will.

Cena_mark - 2011-09-21

Funny how the original almost 30 year old film has better special effects. CG is by far the best and worst thing to happen to cinema.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-09-21

Bullshit.

I'll agree that this is going to be a piece of crap remake, but if you think the original had better special effects you haven't seen it recently.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-09-21

I have seen it recently and it does have better effects.

sosage - 2011-09-21

Are we talking Carpenter's version when we say original? Cause in that case, yes, the effects still look fantastic.

Cena_mark - 2011-09-22

Most of the time you see CG its obvious. Even in films where its done really well.

memedumpster - 2011-09-22

Yeah, I saw it recently too, the effects in this trailer are sub-Episode I and nowhere near the older movie's quality. CG is cartooning and half cartoon remakes suck.

Rovin - 2011-09-22

Ha ha, oh dairyqueenlatifah, such a card.

fatatty - 2011-09-22

CG is not the worst thing to happen to cinema. It is over used, but when used effectively it can do things that you just can't do with practical effects.

Sure Jurassic Park used it better than 95% of everything since, but it can be used well.

jangbones - 2011-09-21

when Carpenter remade The Thing, he actually remade it, borrowing just a few concepts from the original and coming up with new ideas and approaching it in a completely different way

now people are remaking The Thing, but have found a cheap excuse (ooh, this is a prequel!) to avoid admitting that it is completely derivative with no original elements

so at least this is a good illustration of how Hollywood has changed in thirty years

memedumpster - 2011-09-21

Who Goes There is still one of the only sci fi stories that scared me as an adult.

This cannot be further from that.

Void 71 - 2011-09-21

Watch out, '90s. When Hollywood finishes strip mining the '80s, you're next.

Riskbreaker - 2011-09-21

They're already making a new Crow movie, and i think a new Jurassic Park too.

Binro the Heretic - 2011-09-21

Could be worse.

They could all follow George Lucas' example and just re-release the old movies with shitty CGI pasted over them.

Hooker - 2011-09-22

Fuck that, they are remaking TOTAL RECALL. One of the biggest films of the NINETIES.

Hooker - 2011-09-22

Oh, and it's being handled by the director of the Underworld movies.

Riskbreaker - 2011-09-22

Commando and Predator were suppose to be on the line too. Also, Point Break, yeah, it begins....

Chalkdust - 2011-09-22

they already did Predator

it was called

Predators

Hooker - 2011-09-22

I don't think Predators was intended to be a remake, was it? I thought it was just another spin-off.

kingarthur - 2011-09-22

Damn you, 90s. You destroyed my teens. I won't let you have my thirties too!

TeenerTot - 2011-09-22

Hollywood already proved its willingness to mine even a few years back...Remember The Hulk? And then The Hulk?

Rovin - 2011-09-22

Yeah, but, in all fairness, The Incredible Hulk was an improvement.

hammsangwich - 2011-09-21

Replace badass Kurt Russell with a frumpy woman, and BAM, success! FUCK Hollywood...

I would recommend watching The Stuff. It's The Thing if they replaced The Thing with marshmallows.

kwash - 2011-09-22

Cast:
Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Dr. Kate Lloyd, an American paleonthologist graduate from Columbia University. In order to not try to compete with Kurt Russell's portrayal of the 1982 film's protagonist, R.J. MacReady, the character of Kate Lloyd was designed to have traits in common with the character Ellen Ripley from the Alien film series.[7]

Yeah, because one gruff action hero isn't interchangeable with another gruff action hero.

Riskbreaker - 2011-09-22

At least they're not trying to find a Wilford Brimley replacement.

dead_cat - 2011-09-22

I'm actually kind of sad about that. I wanted to see the Wilford Brimley replacement tearing ass underneath the ice in THRILLING 3-D CG.

zerobackup - 2011-09-21

Ouch, the effects looked horrid. The original still has some of the best practical special effects (no half assed CG like this bullshit) of just about any film.

Stopheles - 2011-09-21

"Hey, you know the best way to remake THE THING? Turn it into ALIEN!"

Pillager - 2011-09-21

Fuck prequels.

I want to see a sequel that shows what happened to MacReady & Childs.

kwash - 2011-09-22

Childs was The Thing. He had to be, he wandered off into the arctic alone, and just happened to not run into The Thing? He was The Thing.

Pillager - 2011-09-22

"Why don't we just wait here for a little while. See what happens..."

Dark Horse comics did spiffy series about what happened 24 hours after the '82 movie ended.

dead_cat - 2011-09-22

I did hear that there was originally going to be a scene after that where it's revealed that, among other things, Childs died of exposure -- bu that would have severely weakened the movie's ending. I don't know if there ever really was such a scene though.

Louddetective - 2011-09-22

The comics were ridiculous, they all would have a couple issues of set-up and then boom! MacReady shows up to burn the Thing to hell. Childs gets infected, but I can't remember if he already was at the end of the movie or if it happens later.

Anyway, remaking this movie is dumb. And they can't decide if it's a prequel or a remake or both or what? I don't get it. Carpenter's is one of my favorite movies.

Rovin - 2011-09-22

I remember seeing a television edit of the film at some point probably around '88-'90 that had the usual ending, but added a scene of the Dog/Thing running in the snow (possibly from the beginning of the film, no less) with the "watch the skies" broadcast from the end of Hawks's original "The Thing From Another World" playing over it.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-09-21

Yes, show us as much of the monster as you can. Explain everything. Leave nothing uncertain. You don't want to scare the audience.

EvilHomer - 2011-09-22

I bet the movie ends with the attractive female scientist escaping Antarctica and flying back to her posh LA townhouse to live happily ever after...

Only maybe she's THE THING!

Rovin - 2011-09-22

You kind of have to wonder, if every single cell is a sort of communal organism, does an organism that's been absorbed by The Thing actually KNOW it's been absorbed? What better replica could one have than one that doesn't KNOW it's a replica?

Hank Friendly - 2011-09-21

fuck this piece of shit

dead_cat - 2011-09-22

URRRGH. I have nothing against remakes and prequels and shit like that on principle, but why the fuck can't we ever get people who are up to the task?

dead_cat - 2011-09-22

Fucking hell, further story about the monster from the thing -- that has potential. Think of all the fucked up worlds and adventures that monstrosity has visited and further fucked up! Even a prequel to the exact events of the 80's "The Thing" could still be good -- but not if you let a troop of morons handle the project.

Chalkdust - 2011-09-22

I thought I read somewhere that was the idea, that this ends with the guys chasing the dog-thing

dead_cat - 2011-09-22

Yes, that's what this movie is supposed to be, that;s what I was complaining about. It's a story that could have been good.

Old People - 2011-09-22

Gonna go see it.

Robin Kestrel - 2011-09-22

Me too. I do like the fact that it is not a remake; it tells the story of what happened at the Norwegian camp from the original.

svraz - 2011-09-22

Monster attacks Norwegian camp. Also they are remaking the Thing.

Billy the Poet - 2011-09-22

Cocksuckers.

FABIO - 2012-03-09

They just had to include clear shots of every character who turned out to be infected. Good job, trailer guys.

So this ended up blowing. Barely any of it was paranoia and suspense, most of it was hiding from a clearly visible monster using every horror movie cliche in the book (hide, look, coast is clear, sigh in relief, monster jumps out from behind), and the ending was a point by point xerox copy of the Aliens vs Predator ending.
