Sodium Benzoate + vitamin c = carcinogen soda

First orange soda, now apple juice?!

I still don't get what makes guys like this tick.

He has an MD from Harvard, he knows his basic science and how he is presenting a deliberately distorted view to his target audience (who knows considerably less than he does).

I can only assume that at some point the idea of being a salesman takes over one's outlook, principles and personality.
As long as it sells, it is right.

Xenocide - 2011-09-19

The guy doesn't even seem to have the courage of his own convictions. If you really think apple juice is toxic, why are you giving it to your kids? That makes you either a liar or a bad parent.

EvilHomer - 2011-09-19

He's building up his kids' tolerance to arsenic, just in case they find themselves in a battle of wits with a cunning dwarf.

Meerkat - 2011-09-19

One thing that really typifies Dr. Oz for me -- in some episode about medical marijuana he ranted about how it "pisses him off" when the government gets between him and his patient and tells him what he can or cannot prescribe.

Regardless of the pluses and minuses of the actual subject matter, the sheer self-centeredness of his rant was pretty astonishing.

If this fucker had his way he'd still be prescribing leeches for the common cold.

kamlem - 2011-09-19

Meerkat, you philistine! Clearly trepanation is the only sure treatment for the common cold.

chumbucket - 2011-09-19

If viewers believe it, it must be right.

Void 71 - 2011-09-19

Actually, alternative health advocates generally use bloodletting as an example of a once common medical practice that did more harm than good. They use it to illustrate the potential danger of blindly accepting everything your doctor tells you without question.

I've never seen this guy's show, but he doesn't appear to be fearmongering in this clip. The guy yelling at him without providing his own analysis is the one being shrill. All he's doing is stomping his foot and screaming YOU'RE WRONG AND I'M OUTRAGED. This is tabloid-level debate.

He makes a good point at the end about the bulk of our apples coming from countries that might not have the strictest safety guidelines. Putting that information out there is a positive thing because it might push people away from the supermarket and towards locally grown produce.

gmol - 2011-09-19

It doesn't say he is fearmongering in this clip, he is being accused of doing so in this clip. You needn't look past the commercials for the relevant episode to see that he is.

What is wrong with buying apples from other counties as long as we test them here for safety? How is pushing people to buy local a good thing? I'm all for centralizing resources to reduce overheads in food production.

Hay Belly - 2011-09-19

"I'm all for centralizing resources to reduce overheads in food production."

hahahaha I can bet you're not Irish.

gmol - 2011-09-19

Are you implying that the potato blight would have somehow been mitigated in the absence centralized food production?

The U.S. has the the strongest food security to have ever existed anywhere in the world, it isn't a coincidence that this is paired with extremely energy efficient farming methods.

The cheaper and more quickly you can make food, the more likely you can deal with something like a blight.

garcet71283 - 2011-09-19

So us in the first world die at 60-75 due to cancer. Way I see it, still beats death at 40 by war/starvation/plague/ethnic cleansing.

Can't have your cake and eat it too.

notascientist - 2011-09-19

Actually, modern civilization is based on the idea that we should both have and eat our cakes.

SolRo - 2011-09-19

LOTS of cakes

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2011-09-19

All aboard the fat train!

jreid - 2011-09-19

Five for "shouting fire in a movie theater" and the stuttering, blinking response of a man whose brain is protesting the dishonesty coming out of his mouth.

StanleyPain - 2011-09-19

Dr. Oz is a fucking quack....like every other flavor-of-the-month medical celebrity he's interested in selling books and telling people mostly what they want to hear and occasionally dressing up simple, common sense shit as "TOUGH LOVE" bullshit in the Dr. Phil vein.

Simillion - 2011-09-20

It's a fucking TV show for hypochondriacs staying at home at 9am, wondering what might kill them next. It's his job to give people fun new interesting foods and things to avoid in order to add an imaginary couple of months to their lifespan.

Given that, Dr. Oz is probably the best TV doctor in history.

My (professional) opinion: arsenic in apple juice might kill you. So just don't drink apple juice all the fucking time and you won't be getting any more poisoned than the entire rest of our poisoned, dying planet is already killing you.

StanleyPain - 2011-09-20

The arsenic found in apple juice and many other forms of fruit juice is organic arsenic which is completely natural and can only hurt you in unrealistically massive quantities and under chemical reactions with other acids. The best example of this would be laetrile, the bullshit "fruit smoothie" cancer treatment which basically involved chemically activating organic cyanide so it would "kill your cancer cells", when of course it actually just killed YOU.
Inorganic arsenic is the stuff that is poisonous. You'd think a fucking doctor would know this.
