Bravely rated and reviewed, Abstract Fainter.

This deserves some background info. (cartoon beard activate!)

In the early 80's a small group of nerdy college kids, in their spare time and at their own expense, made this film to promote a sci-fi convention called Daicon.

It was rather popular, and two years later they made a sequel (Daicon IV) which achieved some sort of legendary status almost overnight. This was only compounded by the fact that the film couldn't be sold commercially due to it breaking a gazillion copyrights, which earned it all sorts of underground street cred. Lots of bootlegs were traded around, of course.

The makers of the two films decided they may as well go all in, and resolved to keep making crazy cartoon shit until their money ran out.

Their money has yet to run out. They are now known as Studio Gainax, and they're the cartoon world's version of a polarizing indie rock band that feels the need to reinvent itself with every album.

These men gave the world the likes of Evangelion, FLCL, and Panty & Stocking.

Most of them are still quite fat.

I was wondering what copyrights this thing had broken, and then it started punching me in the face with them at around the three-minute mark.

Mike Tyson?! - 2011-08-23

What copy rights had it broken? All of them.

Japan has a very conservative culture when it comes to the notion of "IP"...this would have surely been protected under fair use in U.S.

Kid Fenris - 2011-08-24

Oddly enough, Gainax's money has run out plenty of times over the years. That's why their president was convicted of tax evasion and why they recycle Evangelion stuff constantly.

Most anime studios are really bad with money.

You are a loose copyright cannon, Gainax! One more screwup and it's over!

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2011-08-24

gmol you couldn't be more wrong. Japan has an entire cottage industry of people making money selling fan-comics and fan-games, here in America Disney sues bakeries and daycare centers that use illustrations of their characters without permission.

WWD,
Japan still has no "fair use", it is only now being considered AFAIK:

My knowledge of and interactions with Japan suggest a very strong regulation of "IP", e.g. miyagegashi.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-08-23

Stuffed to the gills with 80's anime.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-08-23

That's the only type that matters.
