This is especially obvious in the scene where he shows it "transforming". He's clearly adjusting some focal lengths between some of his optics and creating that effect by hand.

A lot of them look just like dust particles, probably contained within the "device". I'd love to send this to my old astronomy professor to confirm that, but he could be dead by now, I'm not sure.
