The best description I've heard for Ron Paul is "principled crackpot".

Robin Kestrel - 2011-08-13

^ As long as he's consistent. Our politicians should be a known quantity, otherwise, why bother electing them?

baleen - 2011-08-13

Really looking forward to the fallout from some of my less literate but goodhearted friends who support this man. "Oops," they'll say, as they pour me countless drinks.

Ursa_minor - 2011-08-13

I want to hate him. I really want to.

HotwaxNinjaPanther - 2011-08-13

A lot of his economic ideas look good in theory, if you ignore the fact that the free market has no reason to care for a worker's wages or safety. He's better than the other candidates by a wide margin, but that just says something about how far the republican party has sunk.
In a more perfect world, we'd all be talking about how good Nader looks compared to all the other candidates these days. But nobody sane wants to touch Nader or any other progressive candidates with a stick because they think he'll just steal votes away from the democrats and let another GW in office.

Cena_mark - 2011-08-13

Nader? Really? What is so bad about the free market? We're not talking about an anarchistic capitalism, just a capitalism that makes it easier for businesses to trade. If governments back off of business they can expand and fix the economy and people will be back to work. Sure as hell will create more jobs than anything Obama's done.

StanleyPain - 2011-08-13

I find it pretty easy what with his retardedly simplistic world view and once-large white power/militia nut support base that he actively courted until the press decided to barely mention it.

hammsangwich - 2011-08-13

Nader is the reason we need runoff voting.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-08-13

Cena, you're so cute that you think government needs to "back off business," when it's really the other way around. Who do you think writes the laws when it comes to energy, banking, etc.?

Void 71 - 2011-08-13

This is where Libertarians get confused. They equate American business with the small business they own or want to own in the future when the reality is that American business is Wal-Mart and Microsoft. In other words, business that gutted America's manufacturing base, outsourced American jobs and destroyed the type of Main Street entrepreneurialism that Libertarians profess to love.

Deregulation has been disastrous to the small businessman.

EvilHomer - 2011-08-13

To be fair, Void, the reason why businesses like WalMart outsource jobs to other countries the first place is because those other countries don't have the same minimum wage, work safety, health care, and other statist regulations in place. If America genuinely deregulated, instead of trying to strike some Keynesian balance between free market capitalism and socialist regulatory oversight, the jobs would come flooding back.

Cena_mark - 2011-08-13

Noid71, that's where you're wrong. Big businesses can handle all the extra legislation. Its the small ones that suffer. Most Americans work for small business, yet all the dems do is want to tax them to death for "making too much money."

minimalist - 2011-08-13

And they wouldn't be jobs that anyone would want.

EvilHomer - 2011-08-13

They don't have to be jobs people WANT; at this point, most working class Americans would settle for jobs they NEED.

Void 71 - 2011-08-13

The problem is that the American version of deregulation has had the effect of choking small businessmen who want to do the right thing (pay their employees a proper wage) and empowering big business to transfer what used to be good paying blue and white collar jobs overseas. When you couple this with the lack of regulation punishing big business for said behavior, you end up with an economic system that grinds both productive Main Street entrepreneurialism (productive meaning local businesses that don't take advantage of dirt cheap slave labor coming in from third world countries to the detriment of the unemployed in their own community) and the American working class under its heel.

Cena_mark - 2011-08-13

Communism... cute, but WRONG!!!!

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2011-08-13

As a self proclaimed libertarian, why would you go work for the big bad 'gubmint, Cena? Why not grab the bull by the horns and blaze your way into the free market to by starting your own business and foster it into an empire? Instead, why run to Uncle Sam for an easy paycheck and free housing when you know damn well you'll just become another burden on hard working Americans? How do you justify your decision of joining the Useless Guard while simultaneously trumpeting the virtues of libertarianism? Are you just dumb and useless drone whose world scheme is made up of nothing but AM radio talking points and binary thinking?

minimalist - 2011-08-13

Now, now. Cena_mark may never be able to join our economic ubermenschen, but he is content to provide valuable services for them by performing daring rescues when their yachts run out of fuel too far out to sea. That's pretty much all the CG does.

He gets lots of gratitude-blowjobs from orange-skinned trophy wives, too.

EvilHomer: Yes, and that explains why our unemployed are lining up to pick fruit for ten bucks a day, because they NEED that work

Oh wait no they aren't, jobs like that are still being done by illegal immigrants because nobody will ever need OR want those jobs unless they have no other choice (ie lack of legal status) and better options (like unemployment oh wait i guess you want to get rid of that too)

Cena_mark - 2011-08-14

Damn it Scrotum, I've explained this a bunch of times. The military is something the constitution totally says the Federal Government can support. This nation and its wealth must be defended and that's what I do.

EvilHomer - 2011-08-14

Speaking of that, Cena, I made a tl;dr reply to your post re: chaplains and military pacifists over at PoeNews.

Minimalist- first off, why would unemployed workers work for ten dollars a day, when unemployment pays far more than that? Unemployment isn't a great idea, either- it rarely pays a living wage, even for singles, but when not working makes more economic sense than working...

Also, you've got to remember, illegal immigrants get paid ten dollars a day for the exact same reason outsourced workers in India get paid ten dollars a day. Documented workers HAVE to be paid minimum wages; companies get taxed on them, health care and safety regulations have to be in place, and so on and so forth. Remove those things, and companies would have no reason to hire undocumented workers over documented ones.

Cena_mark - 2011-08-15

Good Flanders, I responded to that POE News post. Sorry I'm still not in the habit of checking that site.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-08-13

Senator Frothy mix of lube and fecal matter got history spanked. Paul is so goofy, but at least he doesn't tow the line on uncomfortable issues.

Cena_mark - 2011-08-13

What country is Paul running to be president of? France?

EvilHomer - 2011-08-13

Which potential Republican candidate do you support the most, Cena Mark?

Cena_mark - 2011-08-13

Too soon to tell. They're all pretty shitty. However I doubt I'll vote for Obama. Potential shit is far better than proven shit.

Dinanukht - 2011-08-13

I realize that "we just need to mind our own business" is an absurdly simplistic framework for a foreign policy. But it's also infinitely better than the status quo. We are fighting two ill conceived wars of occupation that we can't seem to dig our way out of. Sanctions on Cuba have failed to meet their stated objectives and are merely creating more suffering for the Cuban people. Every expert on Iran I've ever read on the question of "what can we do to stop Iran from getting the bomb?," regardless of their political persuasion, has answered "well, um, nothing actually"—meaning: war would be disastrous, sanctions won't work and diplomacy won't work either. Sanctions seem to be our way of showing that we're not simply ignoring the issue, even though we don't have any confidence whatsoever that we will achieve our desired outcome. In other words: we're trying really hard to look like we have a game plan, even though we obviously don't.

"Libertarians are incapable of being a racist because racism is a collectivist idea." ~ Ron Paul

Cena_mark - 2011-08-13

Well that's a lot less racist than being a democrat.

baleen - 2011-08-14

Frrrrt dur drool

EvilHomer - 2011-08-13

Ron Paul is my perennial write-in candidate.

Toenails - 2011-08-13

I like to go with "Batman with Wolverine claws"

CornOnTheCabre - 2013-03-14

"The Person Who's Reading This Right Now!!!"

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2011-08-14

I can't disagree with where he stands on foreign policy and I admire him for at least setting himself apart from the idiots running against him.

I think Ron Paul is pretty much crazy on a lot of issues in that a society needs government to make sure that people are getting fairly treated and not exploited by a capitalistic system, but I will say this. He is not a warmongering dipshit out to conquer the Third World and for that I thank him.
