Ghibli can do no wrong.

fatatty - 2011-06-29

No, Hayao Miyazaki can do no wrong. Ghibli has released a few mediocre films from other directors. The worst being Tales from Earthsea by Hayao's son Goro.

This is from a new director for the studio so we'll see. Looks great as usual at least.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2011-06-29

No. Miyazaki has made a great film since Spirited Away. One could argue he made a "good" film with Ponyo but that's highly debatable.

Having seen this one twice in the theater already, I can say that this is Ghibli's best film since Princess Mononoke. It's got this sense of wonder while having some downbeat undertones. Probably a bit too slow for the kiddies, but an excellent film all-around and one that I hope doesn't get overlooked because It's Not Miyazaki (nevermind that he wrote the script/"supervised" production)

Ohhh so THAT'S why she's got those weird "ears" on her head.

Daddy Warcrimes - 2011-06-29

So, instead of a modern remake of Nausicaa, we get Miyazaki's "Thumbilina".

Chalkdust - 2011-06-29

you wanted a remake of Nausicaa?

Born in the RSR - 2011-06-29

And what exactly do you mean by "modern" ?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-06-29

Actually, it's based on "The Borrowers."

If it were just the one girl, it could have been "Thumbelina," but more likely one of those giant-fetish cartoons.

SolRo - 2011-06-29

does Nausicaa need a remake?

or do you need to be dragged out to the street and beaten mercilesly?

cognitivedissonance - 2011-06-29

"The Borrowers" has been remade like a half dozen times, the last time starred Jim Broadbent, you should know this.

jreid - 2011-06-29

My young daughter watched Nausicaa (a 20+ year old film) and loved the hell out of it, she's watched it about 5 times now. Somehow that tells me there is nothing about the film that needs to be remade or modernized.

Besides I don't think Miyazaki's in the business of remakes.

Innocent Bystander - 2011-06-29

Yeah. So you can clearly see now that you're an idiot.

augias - 2011-06-29

You also spelled Thumbelina incorrectly.

Daddy Warcrimes - 2011-06-29

Easy there internet tough guys. The original movie was fine for it's time and it stands on it's own. But there's a lot that happens in the books that would make a spectacular mini-series at the very least.

Xenocide - 2011-06-29

Miyazaki doesn't do remakes or sequels. The books stand fine on their own, they don't need a cartoon to justify them.

You'll take your Borrowers and you'll like them, young lady!

OgreMkIV - 2011-06-29

Holy crap, just the trailer by itself looks so much better that that POS movie with John Goodman in it.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-06-29

King Ralph?

OgreMkIV - 2011-06-29

No, the other one.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-06-29

An unexpected cameo by Elton John at 1:10.

TheOtherCapnS - 2011-06-29

Looks good but if there isn't a scene where they tie up a bigger dude with lots of twine then I won't be able to cum at all...

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-06-29

The backgrounds are absolutely gorgeous.

Now if they could just fix those hideous character faces and inconsistent as fuck, jittery animation that's made every Miyazaki film nearly unwatchable for me.

SolRo - 2011-06-30

What's the disease you have that ruined your vision?
