Gambit was a perfect example of the worst of Jim Lee's character design and the worst of Chris Claremont's writing - especially when it came to him writing characters with regional accents, so not only was this guy wearing one of those impractical looking pieces of 90's style comic book head gear that cover everything except the hair, face and ears along with a trenchcoat over a garish bodysuit, almost every line given to him read like this "aw haw haw let the good time rulez mon chere".
