The funny thing about this is that the LDS church has no official stance on evolution, and most LDS people I talk to are totally cool with evolution. In fact, they get kind of fascinated with it in part due to the LDS fascination with genealogy in general.

having been raised LDS, I can tell you that the church definitely does not accept evolution and very few of the thousands of mormons that I have known are cool with it. The ones you know were probably just acting cool with it so that they could avoid getting into a debate and being made a fool of for being ignorant of basic biology.

The longer the right has NewsCorp's platform to propagandize, the further and further they move away from any semblance of reality. The worst thing that can happen to these people is themselves.

The right isn't the right any more. Compare their rhetoric from twenty years ago to now and a lot of important positions have devolved. Now their great, central thinkers are Limbaugh, Palin and Beck, posturing and crazy populists, and they can only drag the mainstream so far into crazyland before the baby boomers start dying off.

Yes, there are a lot of stupid people in America but there are a lot of rational people too. Sure they can be misinformed and prejudiced and gullible but they also look at a chair and see a chair and not a black muslim with a knife.

Look at it this way; at some point today, one right winger will read Andrea Peyser's column in the New York Post decrying the "narrow minded racism that rules" NPR and realize that her entire concept is absolutely ridiculous and has no relation to reality in the slightest. And it will take a long time and some crazy shit will happen but America will slowly start to realize how much of the right wing information for the past twenty years has only been populist propaganda.

I think the problem ordinary people have with evolution is that they think their uninformed suppositions are equal to the totality of human science.

I think a lot of the problem is species narcissism, really. We talk and wear clothes and have cars and internet and opposable thumbs, surely we can't be just another variant species - or just another form of animal. We must be SPECIAL. It's a mindset relatively similar to the old "Earth is the center of the Universe" idea. We MUST be the most important, because we are US, dammit.
