It doesn't look like a bad movie for kids. Better than the source material, even.
That won't stop the manchildren from crying about how much it rapes their childhood.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2010-07-28 Nobody's nostalgic about Yogi Bear, I refuse to believe it.
Fun fact: the reason he wears a tie is so that they could recycle his head animations without worrying about his neck.

CornOnTheCabre - 2010-07-29 whoa.
Justin Timberlake is REALLY good at that.

|
Sundry - 2010-07-29 Xenocide, sometimes it is perfectly fine to give a child a cartoon about a talking bear who steals picnic baskets and has pratfalls.
This isn't crap. This is perfectly appropiate for small kids.
This looks as good or better than the original cartoons that some of our parents grew up watching.
Which, if Yogi is responsible, would make the older generation as empty-headed as the younger generation.

|
Sundry - 2010-07-29 It doesn't look like a bad movie. It looks acceptable. Pratfalls and funny animals are good enough to entertain little children without hurting their brains.
Way better than mixed messes like the Shrek sequels, Tim Burton's Alice or the Airbender movie.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2010-07-29 On the other hand, if they mess with Huckleberry Hound, there will be hell to pay!
|
Xenocide - 2010-07-29 Sundry: I would be fine with this if it was just pratfalls. But everything about this, from the (creepy-looking uncanny-valley animation on down) has a not-even-trying quality to it that makes it seem almost as lazy and cheap as...well, a Hanna-Barbera cartoon.
Holy shit, we're finally getting a faithful Hollywood adaption of an old property.
|
twinkieafternoon - 2010-07-29 I wouldn't say they're not trying--it looks more like a "hey, we're just having fun doin' a kid's movie" detached vibe to it.
|
John Holmes Motherfucker - 2010-07-29 Xenocide: I don't think that's a proper use of "Uncanny Valley". the Theory has to do with facsimiles of human beings. It doesn't apply to bears
Since first seeing this about an hour and a half ago, I'm realizing that Yogi is kind of special. He may have been the most deliciously subversive cartoon character from that Post-Eisenhower era. He not only defied authority (the Ranger) , but he defied the Holy Work Ethic.. Who remembers the theme song?
He will sleep till noon, but before it's dark
He'll have every picnic basket that's in Jellystone Park!
With Dan Akroyd playing Yogi, there's some hope that aspect of things will survive. I wouldn't expecrt to learn that from the trailer.
Beyond that, the bar is pretty low. Nobody's going to come out of this feeling nostaligic for 1960s tv animation, and I'm sure the jokes will be better..
If this is a hit, do you think we'l;l get Justin Timberlake as Giligan and Dan Ackroyd as the skipper? Yuck.

5 stars because Dan Aykroyd actually looks like his character in Nothing But Trouble now.

hornung - 2010-07-29
El Hefe from NOFX should do all the voices.

dementomstie - 2010-07-29
Is it just me or does the Dan Aykroyd Yogi sound a lot like Rodney Dangerfield?
|
dead_cat - 2010-07-29 A Rodney Dangerfield-voiced Yogi would have roused my interest in actually seeing this film.

At least he's not running around New York City.

Is one of the cops the dude from It's Alway's Sunny?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2010-07-29
This fills me with anger. I can do a perfect Yogi bear impression and so far it's been worthless but it's so much better than Dan Akroyd's half assed attempt that I truly feel they should replace him.
Man what I wouldn't give to cash in on the success of absolute garbage from idiots willing to expose their children to mind numbing insults to film.

All I know is that as a little kid I watched a TON of Yogi cartoons, and even at that age knew them to be complete and utter shit. But maybe those of you arguing for this are right - maybe this will be somewhat less shitty. Maybe it won't be a punishment to make little kids sit through this.
Still, I will not be responsible for my actions if they follow this up with an El Kabong movie.
