Still not as metal as Dio.

FeeFiFoFoTheFifeFifeBrown - 2010-05-22

Never before, never again.

Disparaging Dio references are the metal Godwin's Law.

Comeuppance - 2010-05-22

Needed more melodic death metal. I have a wholly embarrassing soft spot for that music.

This guy is good, though.

kingofthenothing - 2010-05-22

right on.

halon - 2010-05-22

glasseye - 2010-05-22

And all 10 are pure crap.

manfred - 2010-05-22

Goethe and ernie - 2010-05-22

No deathgrind?

splatterbabble - 2010-05-22

No Dillinger Escape Plan Mathcore?

pastorofmuppets - 2010-05-22

Hard to play keyboard drums that quickly. Or in such weird meters.

ztc - 2010-05-22

Sepultura, stop arguing and get in the Metalcore queue, the expert has spoken.

MrBuddy - 2010-05-22

Would have been nice if he would have included some band names as examples. Yes, he's very talented and all but how good is he at Guitar Hero?

ProfessorChaos - 2010-05-22

I'd love to hear more of that "Folk Metal". Especially a folk metal cover of some simon and garfunkel, or something else that would be appropriately ludicrous.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2010-05-22

Yeah, the Folk Metal was good. Makes me want to listen to Rhapsody of Fire again... though they are technically power metal.

splatterbabble - 2010-05-22

When GWAR tried Folk Metal and Power Ballads, the Bohabs I know didn't take to kindly to it (see also: Carnival of Chaos, Ragnarok, We Kill Everything), though Dirk Drakulich (Sleazy P Martini) said in a radio interview "Oh no, GWAR's trying something new and people want the same old GWAR they've listened to a million times..." I was paraphrasing, but it's gist of it. Then, later, GWAR put their man-pants back on and got back to the Thrash, Gore, and Heavy Metal.

But, the Folk Metal this guy's playing reminds me of At That Gates, and if you've not heard them, go listen to them.

Comeuppance - 2010-05-22

Ensiferum is pretty good, if you can excuse their so-cliché-it-hurts lyrics.

myassisonfire - 2010-05-22

I think splatterbabble is thinking of In Flames. The only At The Gates that sounds remotely folkish is Terminal Spirit Disease (coincidentally their "worst" album).

Goethe and ernie - 2010-05-22

Just listen to Turisas

misterbuns - 2013-01-21

I was a huge gear junkie in highschool and I loved alot of the goofy stuff they did on WKE and Carnival of Chaos.

Gwar are not technical musicians, and technical musicians make up the best metal bands.

Instead Gwar has alot of latitude, which most metal bands don't have, and I think gwar always worked best when sometimes it was Frank Zappa on steroids, sometimes it was motorhead, sometimes it was lamb of god and sometimes it was doctor suess's pedophile brother.

When Gwar became 'pure metal' after WKE they lost their sense of humor and were left only with their less-than-technical skills to compete with a genre full of people who can just do it better.

one word: Gojira.

Hooker - 2010-05-22

I didn't know Borat was such a talented guitarist. Very nice!

myassisonfire - 2010-05-22

Cool summary of generalizations, but you'd really need to be a lame guitarist to think tapping equates to talent.

JimL2 - 2010-05-23

oh ok

Lies, lies, LIES! - 2010-05-22

Informative!

pastorofmuppets - 2010-05-22

Metalheads of poetv, would you do me the favor of recommending some albums? If it helps: I listen to things like The Flying Burrito Brothers and My Morning Jacket. I find prog and thrash cheesy. I have and enjoy things by Off Minor and Wolf Eyes. Do not care for Tool.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-05-22

Also, I love things like Dead Meadow but I figured that went without saying. I want to get into more "traditional" metal if that means anything.

CornOnTheCabre - 2010-05-22

i recommend the album with sharp, jagged edges so you can KILL YOURSELF ON IT

myassisonfire - 2010-05-22

The fuck is 'traditional metal'? You've just watched a video summarizing 10 genres and that's the best guideline you can provide?

pastorofmuppets - 2010-05-22

I say traditional because I realize that none of the stuff I listed is metal.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-05-22

And if a couple of guitar riffs all played over the same chords and rhythm is enough to summarize decades of metal then it's probably better that I stay away.

megaspy2000 - 2010-05-25

vader - silent empire
bathory - blood, fire, death
slayer - show no mercy
immortal - diabolical fullmoon mysticism

^all personal faves

kingofthenothing - 2010-06-05

Bal Sagoth.

The Mothership - 2023-09-03

Anything from Amon Amarth or In Flames.

I'm biased, these are both folk metal / melodic death metal acts.

myassisonfire - 2010-05-23

Ok then. Start with:

Death - "Symbolic" and "The Sound of Perseverance"
At the Gates - "Slaughter of the Soul"
High on Fire - "Blessed Black Wings"
Darkane - "Layers of Lies"
Bloodbath - "Resurrection through Carnage"
The Haunted - "rEVOLEr"
Enslaved - "ISA"
Strapping Young Lad - "City"
Old Man's Child - "In Defiance of Existence"

Any of which reveal this dude to be quite untalented/uncreative, and none are prog or thrash.

myassisonfire - 2010-05-23

Directed at pastorofmuppets, obviously.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-05-23

Much appreciated.

Broose182 - 2010-05-24

Starred for both the vid and you 'guyses' being informative.

chumbucket - 2010-05-25

2:59 - "Is that it? Is that all?"

kwash - 2010-07-09

-1 star because the melodic death metal riff is the intro from Avenged Sevenfold's Unholy Confession.

-1 Internets from myself for knowing this.

Adramelech - 2010-08-20

It's actually Intestine Baalism.

What, you think Avenged Sevenfold wrote something original?

kwash - 2011-06-21

I am shamed.

ogmisce - 2010-08-09

awesome. not a huge metal guy but that was awesome.

FABIO - 2014-02-03

Well what do you know, Frog's Theme from Chrono Trigger was really Folk Metal.
