How humans mourn their died.

Smellvin - 2010-04-28

To be fair, if I saw a guy laying face down on the sidewalk, I'd just assume he was a passed-out drunk. Unless there's a huge pool of blood, I don't see how people are supposed to know that he was dying. Would you go over and poke someone lying on the sidewalk just to see how he was doing?

Hooper_X - 2010-04-28

The point is that you're assumed to have the human fucking decency to go "hey buddy, you OK?"

spikestoyiu - 2010-04-28

One person takes a cell phone picture while another lifts him up, sees a pool of blood, and then go grabs a coffee or some shit.

TeenerTot - 2010-04-28

The part that got me is it seems even the woman he saved didn't call anybody.

Scynne - 2010-04-28

Maybe it was a ruse. She and Knife Guy had teamed up to act out a "damsel in distress" scenario, just to rid the world of one more chivalryfag.

Spastic Avenger - 2010-04-28

A man died.

Aelric - 2010-04-28

Last Action Hero was a documentary.

MagickPoultry - 2010-04-28

Well yeah, the parts that were in OUR world.

Baldr - 2010-04-28

I recently finished Robert Cialdini's, "Influence the Psychology of Persuasion", which sounds like one of those manipulative douche books, but is actually about avoiding people's bullshit.

He spends a lot of time on the bystander effect, and suggests a method for breaking it if you're ever in a situation like this and retain the ability to speak. If you look like you're in trouble, or cry out for help, or address your request to multiple people, then there's a good chance you'll be ignored. You have to single out an individual in the crowd and say that they specifically have to go get help. Once you make it an individual's responsibility, your chances of getting help go way up. Also, once the rest of the crowd sees one person helping, they'll be more likely to assist as well.

spikestoyiu - 2010-04-28

Doesn't work on black people.

BorrowedSolution - 2010-04-28

That is a way to manipulate people, Baldr. But it might save your life, so it's okay. So I guess what we've learned today is that manipulative and douche aren't necessarily mutually inclusive terms.

FABIO - 2010-04-28

Pfff, a little girl named Scout had that figured out decades ago.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-04-28

I think Baldr was saying that it's more defensive than offensive. And seeing as we live in an age where media and advertisers are trying to manipulate us 100% of our waking hours, I can say that he's telling the truth without even having read it.

La Loco - 2010-04-28

This wouldn't have happened if he had a life alert medical bracelet.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2010-04-28

If you have ever lived in new york, There is literally nothing peculiar or special about a homeless man passed out on a sidewalk. There is no way all these people could have known he was dead.

Tameriaen - 2010-04-28

Asleep against the side of a building is one thing. Face down next to the street is another. Someone should have asked if he was ok, upon not hearing a response they should have noticed he wasn't breathing. They didn't. He is dead. The fact that a dozen others did the same thing doesn't make it alright, it just makes it sad.

bias - 2010-04-28

If you think you would have done different than you're probably wrong, that's how the bystander effect works. That's also why its awful.

AfricanScience - 2010-04-28

that's Jew York for you. I bet he was from palestine.

nemeses9 - 2010-04-28

I've said it before and I'll say it again; I never, ever want to go to New York.

If anything is a testament to how broken we are as a country, it's good ol' NY.

Angel Carver - 2010-04-28

Blow it out yer ass!

pastorofmuppets - 2010-04-28

Congratulations, you've solved human nature. Want a cookie? Or, what do trolls eat, anyway?

La Loco - 2010-04-29

Please stay out of NY.

nemeses9 - 2010-04-29

Nah, I'm not fond of cookies. I would totally dig some hot wings right about now though.

FABIO - 2010-04-29

Probably viral marketing anyways.

Longshot- - 2010-04-29

yeah, for that new Toy Story movie.

Reipuman - 2010-04-29

now the rats are coming to feed
every night they bring more and more of their friends
immune to rat poison and totally unafraid
and this is a very special treat indeed

they crawl up my pantleg, I'm too weak to move
no one hears my cries as they start on my toes
their teeth are like razors as they gnaw through my hands
it sure beats McDonald's so get it while it lasts!
