Multipart error, part 2 is http://vimeo.com/10298933

This is how I always pictured proteins working, but in 3-D and smaller

Absolutely fascinating. Throw a bunch of these in a washing machine for a couple million years, and lets see what happens.

You'd probably just have a big pile of splinters.

Sentient splinters.

The best kind!

urbanelf - 2010-03-21

They weren't scared it would turn the surface of the earth into wooden goo?

people I was happy to find out are still alive: Roger Penrose

But who lifted the first lever!?

Syd Midnight - 2010-03-22

Seriousanswer: The levers are mimicking the way proteins can conditionally lock, unlock, and fold each other. The parts are amino acids, which can form naturally. IRL they hook electrically through atomic bonding.

Worth noting that the shaking represents heat energy naturally shaking the molecules around. Life doesn't violate thermodynamics because it only works when it is consuming energy, if you stop shaking the box the wood creatures "freeze to death".

I was actually referring to the philosophical question "if God created everything, then who created God".

Thanks for derailing what could've been the most important discussion in philosophy in the 2010s.

This was fucking amazing.

If they had shown me this when I was like 6 I would have cured death by now this damn thing was so cool.

Diogenes - 2010-03-22

I think the bigger revelation in this video is that at one point universities had doctoral programs in woodshop.
