so is stan lee richer than hefner right now?
|
kelpfoot - 2009-09-01 Stroking my beard a little bit, if I recall correctly, the reason there was such a long delay between the releases of Spiderman 1 & 2 was that Marvel was trying to dick Stan Lee out of his royalties. Apparently he was entitled to a share of the profits, but his contract had been written in such a way that gross revenues of ~0 million did not count as "profit."
Marvel only caved in and paid him when they realized they needed his permission to release a sequel, and the cost of paying him was less than the billion or so dollars they've probably made from all three movies.
So in other words, I'm betting they're doing everything they can to dick him over.

Ponasty - 2009-09-01 he was interviewed on NPR yesterday and the gist of it was that he had some stock in Marvel and in Disney but that of the 4billion price tag he was not a direct beneficiary. He is by no means the major stock holder.

GQ - 2009-09-01
To everyone fearful about this deal: This is basically going to be the same deal as Disney's with Pixar, and Disney will be basically totally hands off on the day to day operations of Marvel.

Pillager - 2011-02-13 When Jim Shooter spoke a our LCBS, the subject of the Disney merger came up.
Pro: The trains will run on time.
Con: Squelching creativity is what Disney excels at.

Perfectly reasonable from a business perspective. Disney does not have anything for the young male demographic, try though as they might. Right now, Disney Princesses are outselling Barbie... any trip to Toys R Us will tell you that. By buying Marvel, they now have the brand to fill up the boys half of the store just as dramatically.
The one worry that MIGHT be worth fearing is what happens if Disney's Marvel wants to play hardball with Diamond Distributing, which has the monopoly on comic book distribution. Diamond is itching for a fall (hubris of an epic scale), and when they do, the local comic book shop will be the one that suffers.

Xenocide - 2009-09-01
Disney can't be trusted with Marvel's characters? What do they know about endlessly whoring out characters who are decades past their prime and incredibly played out?
Oh, right.
