Hey, look who is back!

Hellooooooo, Rodents! So, will you be willing to discuss this documentary in the Poenews forums?
Will you keep changing the world, as you said?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-08-14

You know, I do feel bad about what happened there, because I basically lashed out at a bunch of people rather than having a rational discussion. After a while I just got pissed and I'm not proud of that. Mainly I felt that I had made good points in the past, but a lot of people was writing off everything that I had ever said on the subject.

If you think I'm too emotional over the subject, just skip straight to part 6 and watch the part on Vietnam.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-08-14

Also I felt like a bunch of people were trying to provoke me who weren't ever going to agree with me on any level. I don't believe GMO's are safe and I don't think that I'm stupid because of that. I think distrust is essential when it comes to Monsanto.

Sundry - 2009-08-14

Rodents, I'm not going to bother watching this thing unless you come discuss it on the poenews forums. You can make the first post.

Sundry - 2009-08-14

Rodents, I'm not even going to bother watching this video unless you come discuss it on Poenews.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-08-14

Sundry, you must really love me!

I don't want to go over to Poe News because I'm ashamed of the fact that I posted while

a) incredibly depressed
b) infuriated, though not necessarily at POEN

I'll consider it.

Sundry - 2009-08-14

Is it love, or am I just using you?
Have you considered the possibility that Monsanto pays people to engage in conversations that make them look good? That, maybe, I want you back because I judge you a soft discussion partner that can be easily knocked down so that I can talk about the virtues of GE technology?

Because I sure as hell have wondered if you present your points so badly because you want your argument to lose.

phalsebob - 2009-08-14

Or maybe YOU work for Monsanto, Sundry. Did you ever think of THAT?!

phalsebob - 2009-08-14

Oh wait nvm. I just woke up anyway.

kelpfoot - 2009-08-14

No offense Rodents, but fuck this noise.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-08-14

How about fuck you for not even watching this. They go through a number of the dangers both to the public health and indigenous farmers whose livelihoods are being threatened by monopoly.

See, this is why I got upset before. If you come into this argument ready to shut down any and all evidence against GE crops and the political tactics that come with them because you've been fooled by all the hype they put out, then you're just guilty of not caring about the effect this has around the world.

I agonize over what is happening to these farmers. They have to deal with Monsanto coming in and paying off governments to get rid of local seed so they can replace it with their own and raise the price, resulting in a huge danger to the economics of the poor. This is HUGE. And so are the payoffs, the bullying, the controlling of the FDA, the harassment towards anyone that disagrees with them, etcetera.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-08-14

Also, I'm going to make a plea that if people rate this, they actually watch at least part of it first, rather than base it on their feelings towards me. I would appreciate it.

kelpfoot - 2009-08-14

Sorry mate, I've seen this shit before. Selective information, facts misrepresented to fit a narrative, multiple weak arguments presented in lieu of a single good one, and a lot of scary camerawork. I don't remember anything I found particularly convincing.

Thanks for telling me about those poor farmers, though. Nothing wins people over to your side like insults followed by a butthurt screed about oppressed smurfs.

The Faghorn - 2009-08-14

You walk it to him, kelpfoot. I'm sick of the dialogue being dominated by stories about the poor itty bitty crybaby farmers, and how poor widdle baby Afwica is being picked on by big meanies.

William Burns - 2009-08-14

Monsanto has done some pretty indefensable shit, who cares what you're sick of hearing. Also unexcusable is this metadrama. Take it back to POEN, ladies.

Oktay - 2009-08-14

Kelpfoot: debate this single weak argument: pollenation of crops is not controllable, given that it happens through wind, insects, etc. Monsanto is then able to sue the pants off of a farmer even if there is no intent of wrongdoing, let alone the ability to control the pollenation process. This is wrong.

kelpfoot - 2009-08-14

Oktay: The ruling you're thinking of is Monsanto v. Schmeiser. It is only binding in Canada. And contrary to you and the thousands or paranoiac wankjobs who misreported this story before you, Monsanto v. Schmeiser is probably not applicable in cases of accidental pollenation (Mr. Schmeiser himself admitted he deliberately isolated and stored RoundUp-ready seeds).

Everyone else: Take a deep breath, come back down to Earth, and with crushing humiliation realize that you just unironically five-starred a documentary that was made by retarded people.

Document - 2009-08-14

You're an apologist for Monsanto.

I think you forgo the right to decide what's "retarded".

Witty_Pop_Culture_Reference - 2009-08-14

Yes, it's pretty common place for an organization that creates poisons to get fined 700 million dollars at a time for the damage they have done poisoning people with PCBs, or get convicted in other courts for organizing the deliberate obfuscation of information to the public that would reveal the dangers of products they are selling, or get fined millions for bribing government officials to ignore environmental impact studies, or...

...you know what, fuck it. Go fucking google 'Monsanto fined' before you think you're being hip and edgy and cool defending these douchebags, and shut the fuck up until you know what you are talking about, lest ye be a douche as well.

(Not replying to Document, obviously)

kelpfoot - 2009-08-14

> think you're being hip and edgy and cool defending these douchebags

Oh, fuck you and your subliterate reading comprehension.

Whatever, I'm out. Don't let me get in the way of your little wankfest.

Oktay - 2009-08-16

I just googled "monsanto sues" and apparently it's more than just one case. But I guess they're all paranoid wankjobs.

Document - 2009-08-14

I have no idea about the POE-n drama or the people involved or whatever the fuck's going on in the posts above me, but Monsanto is - if nothing else - a hub of some pretty unethical business conduct, checking off all the boxes from dumping toxic waste into public landfills to plain old fucking over of farmers.

FeeFiFoFoTheFifeFifeBrown - 2009-08-14

"I have no idea about the POE-n drama or the people involved or whatever the fuck's going on in the posts above me"

As it should be.

Syd Midnight - 2009-08-14

Rodents can't distinguish between between genetic modification and Monsanto itself. Nobody here thinks Monsanto is anything besides the purest evil, but to ROUS that means that ERGO drought resistant wheat is also the purest evil.

Document - 2009-08-15

I honestly don't care, Syd.

Witty_Pop_Culture_Reference - 2009-08-14

^ As above, however Monsanto is still a shitbag corporation run by shitbag people. They would be if they were selling ice cream.

GMOs are not the be all and end all of the issue- I'm sure anyone with reason knows how they have saved millions of lives with modified wheat strains. They also have some very scary downsides in other situations.

What really sucks is the fact that people can't get through their heads that in a 'free market' any corporation that achieves an edge will do whatever it can get away with to obtain and control a total monopoly, thus negating the free market it crawled out of in the first place.

Monsanto is attempting to do just that. It's pretty elementary math if you just pay attention.

socialist_hentai - 2009-08-14

I rate five, i had seen this before and i found it interesting. I wish i could partake of the forum drama but forums have always been hella confusing to me and the poen one more so.

phalsebob - 2009-08-14

No you don't. It's all just people niggling over issues, yelling, and people demanding citations and numbers about joke comments.

Xenocide - 2009-08-14

I have no idea what little drama you twats are going on about, but any video that evokes this much of a response has earned its five stars.

pastorofmuppets - 2009-08-14

Genetic modification is used in a number of areas. I think that to say it's OK for things like vaccines and insulin but not for food is drawing a somewhat arbitrary line.

Unless greed somehow disappears, using technology to increase yield is really the only shot we have of feeding the world's population.

Still, if there's one place Monsanto deserves five shiny stars, it's a site called Portal of Evil. Don't spend them all in one place, boys.

Hooker - 2009-08-14

POEN is fascinating to me. It seems like every other angry, insecure message board, but the masses there have a tendency to fall on the other side of expected positions, like this one, apparently. I don't know why anyone would purposefully get into a discussion there, though.

YAY FOR RODENTS OF UNUSUAL SIZE!

Hooker - 2009-08-14

Also, I didn't watch this before I rated.

poorwill - 2009-08-14

Fuck Monsanto, but yaaaaay GE! On-the-fly genome manipulation by 2050 or bust.

Baron_Von_Bad_Beaver - 2009-08-14

RISE COMRADES! RRRRRIIIIIISSSSEEEEEEE!

Zoot42 - 2009-08-17

I love Monsanto, they are so comically evil.

That's pretty sad for me to think it's funny, huh?
