Stuff like this would have made the videogame of The Thing marginally interesting.

This reminds me that i need to do the Chrysler buidling thing one of these days.

Nikon - 2009-08-10

The end fight against the true boss on top of the Chrysler Bldg. is one of the longest and most satisfying battles I've had playing a videogame. Make sure you've finished the game enough times to have a powerful set of armor and a very lethal handcannon.

5 stars for the shots where it was clutching its stomach and chest.

Diarrhea is like mitochondria, ranging inside you!

Parasite Eve was the last good RPG Square made =(

Bonus: This game had a hand in my freshman roommate flunking out. He'd stay up till 7 in the morning for weeks playing through the Crysler building and sleep all day. He must have played through the regular game at least half a dozen times getting all the cards and super tool kits and building up his gun.

I can't refute that statement. I have a lot of wonderful memories playing through the first PE. I hope that the third one for the PSP does not disappoint (but this is from Square, so my hopes are appropriately bated.)

megaspy2000 - 2009-08-10

wtf they made a second one?

this game absorbed an entire christmas vacation. at least i can blame flunking college on something more sensible like drugs

Vagrant Story says hi, also, Threads of Fate is a fun light rpg adventure. I'll say Square reach it's peak in the year 2000, after that it was the fusion with enix and everything went to hell.

poorwill - 2009-08-10

I hate Vagrant Story.
I am probably saying this to the wrong person, aren't I?

Nikon - 2009-08-10

Vagrant Story really didn't hold my interest. The assless chaps were also an odd choice. I might try to play it again because I love the world of Ivalice.

Riskbreaker - 2009-08-10

Vagrant Story is a masterpiece, is my favorite game of all time. I played the hell out of it for hours, days, weeks, months, years. Did everything i could and got all the titles from finishing in 2hrs to finishing with no saving and so on.

So yeah, you guys are wrong.

FABIO - 2009-08-11

Parasite Eve 2 was pretty dull. It had a great opening but then dumps you until a dull Resident Evil formula where you putt around a gas station for most of the game. Why they took an original fun formula and decided to turn it into RE at a time when RE type games had gotten pretty dull is a mystery.

About the only decent thing you can say about Vagrant Story is it had well written dialog. The entire combat and item system was so ridiculously obtuse that you ended up having to use the damage reflect ability to kill 90% of the bosses in the game.

"About the only decent thing you can say about Vagrant Story is it had well written dialog."

LIAR!! The whole script is up on GameFAQs (!) so I could quote some choice stupidity, but it really is pretty bad all the way through. We're talking near-MGS-level terribleness. It has every tired fantasy videogame cliche there is, it just takes itself very, very seriously.

Also, obtuseness was only half the problem of the gameplay system - the real problem with VS is that it has the exact same core gameplay as every other RPG, but it makes all the tedious and totally braindead rock-paper-scissors elements IMPORTANT. It's a deep game in the shallowest sense, because while there's a lot to become familiar with, there's one surefire strategy that will see you through any encounter: familiarity and patience. That's all you need. If you understand how the game works, you can't die, but if you do die it won't be because you made a poor decision, it will be because you made the decision you weren't supposed to make - and there are never any *interesting* decisions to make. There's also no real *logic* to mining its depths, so you couldn't even call it a puzzle - it just requires patience, preferably autsim. The whole thing is done by rote - it's basically one of those alchemy subquests made into a game. It is a game designed for chris chans.

Riskbreaker - 2009-08-12

You people are insane, that's all i will say.

Aubrey McFate - 2009-08-10

This was a good game. It trimmed all the extraneous bullshit and aimed for a short, enjoyable experience.
