Meh. It looks more cleverer than it is. The optical mouse is just tracking the speed and direction of the disc, the drive itself is just added visual complexity to give the impression the guy actually made something.
When people get pissy and call people hipster douches or Nathan Barleys, they mean this sort of thing.

zatojones - 2009-07-30 In BBBS defense, I looked up the software, and it pretty much handles the scratching for you and ensures that you never go off the beat. That pretty much takes all the artistry out of this

foopants - 2009-07-31 If you are doing fake scratches like he is, you better bring more to the table than that, as it takes little skill (but still sounds cool). If something's beatmatching for you you better be doing something else creative. His scratching - meh. His little "invention" - great.
