Related videos offer up a whole competitive genre of collegiate philosophy major in-jokes in the election ad format. Some better, many worse than this.

Would be funnier if they had chosen two contemporaries.

Dinkin Flicka - 2009-04-30

YOU MEAN LIKE OBAMA AND MCCAIN ROFL

futurebot - 2009-04-29

We laugh, but Objectivists would take this commercial completely seriously. Those people HATE Kant.

millerman13 - 2009-04-29

And I hate Ayn Rand.

Cena_mark - 2009-04-30

I hate philosophy. Its almost as bad as religion. Dude have been philosophizing for thousands of years and what has it given us?

Muddy Mae Suggins - 2009-04-30

Dudes have been putting on make-up and spandex then pretend fighting for years and what has it given us?

Philosophy is more useful than a lot of things...

To those of you watching this debate, especially the young, Please let Ayn Rand speak for herself. Do not deny yourself the discovery of her sunlit universe because some bitter, impotent irrationalist on youtube decided to try to smear her with lies. Again, the Ayn Rand Lexicon is available for free on the web. Her stunning, original novels showing her ideal man in action are available in any book store or library. And her philosophy is propagated by the Ayn Rand Institute. Judge her first-hand.

Keefu - 2009-04-30

also shut up cena_mark

Cena_mark - 2009-04-30

You want some philosophy Peefu? You suck therefore you're gay.

Keefu - 2009-04-30

Well, you're FAT.

simon666 - 2009-04-30

Philosophizing for thousands of years led us to focus on logic, giving way to rhetoric as critical theory to be the best way so one may situate one's self in the world. TAKE THAT CENA FAG! OH SNAP.

I hate "in" jokes, -1.

Dinkin Flicka - 2009-04-30

Logic also helps argumentation skills. Which explains a lot for Cena_Mark.

But if you didn't know, most (but not all) subjects they teach in schools were at one point philosophy. Without philosophy, you wouldn't have beautiful, beautiful subjects like sciences and humanities. Furthermore, the literal translation of philosophy is "love of knowledge." Since you, Cena, appear to not love knowledge, I can see why the question "what has philosophy given us" has some meaning for you.

cognitivedissonance - 2009-04-30

"I kinda know what the word 'ontological' means, and let me tell you, Ayn Rand knew more in her little finger about bone structure than Kant knew in his entire life!"

pastorofmuppets - 2009-05-05

The reason philosophy is good is because it's fun. How's that?

And FWIW Kant might be my favorite philosopher, though Hegel and Sartre are high up as well. Ayn Rand would be my second-to-least, were she actually a philosopher rather than a reactionary surrounded by a cult that shields her work from inquiry. Not unlike creationism...politics and playing the game trumping logic and having something to say.

My least favorite is the prof I had who combined non-substantiality with a COMPLETE misunderstanding of quantum physics, and claimed that all this was a legitimate branch of philosophy that he had invented (free-form poetry was involved as well). He had eternal tenure despite his inability to teach because the school wanted the distinction of a new philosophy being there. Everybody else in the philosophy dept. knew what bullshit it was, too.

ProfessorChaos - 2009-04-29

I stand by a write-in vote for Descarte.

millerman13 - 2009-04-29

Or Sartre...

Chalkdust - 2009-04-29

Dirtchamber - 2009-04-30

Oh man, it's like someone made a video just for me!

Goethe and ernie - 2009-04-30

This only just got submitted? Damn, this is one of those things that I never bothered submitting because I was so sure it would've been here for years. Five stars for an awesome video, minus one for making me feel internet uncool.

pastorofmuppets - 2009-05-05

Kant is change we can have a priori knowledge of.

Charles - 2009-06-10

You don't have to be "in the know" for this to be funny.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2009-07-25

Okay, I laughed hard at this. Dammit. FUCK YOU HEIDEGGAR!!
