For people unaware of numbers stations check the wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numbers_station

Absolutely fascinating stuff.

I happened across a numbers station when I was a kid, playing with an old SW radio my dad had lying around. I didn't know what to make of it, but it really creeped me out.

There are creepy things all over the SW dial: beacons, strange tones, short recordings in other languages on constant repeat, things that might as well be aliens.

But yeah, read the wiki.

The Emergency Broadcast System "This Is Only A Test" jingle alone is worth at least a 5.

The actual number reading is sampled in a Stereolab song.

Which one?

Thanks.

The first time I came across a numbers station, I got physically ill from creeped-outedness.

Those people who are unaware of numbers stations: after reading the wiki, google "The Conet Project" - it's a multi-disc box set of numbers stations, with a comprehensive (as much as can be, given the secretive nature of the material) book. It's available as a totally free download via the guy and label that originally released it commercially.

It's amazing.

wounds my heart with a monotonous languor

i don't find these things creepy

kiint - 2009-04-06

oh you would if you had seen the movie KNOWING starring NICHOLAS CAGE!

svraz - 2009-04-06

Instead of using number stations I wonder if spies today use message boards and/or comment sections.

Doubt it, at least not in the same way. You can trace those back and tell when people are looking at them.

The thing about Shortwave transmissions is that there's no record of anyone ever listening to it, and the listener can be anywhere. The reach of a lot of these things is global.

MrBuddy - 2009-04-06

Numbers stations don't sound nearly that creepy when I hear them on the radio. Labyrinth13 also has a Spanish numbers station video.

The Spanish numbers come from Cuba. A spy in the Clinton administration got her instructions from a station like that. She almost managed to convince Bill Clinton to reestablish ties with Cuba.

Xiphias - 2009-04-06

yes, that is what spies do. convince presidents to open ties with countries.

Oldmacho - 2009-04-06

A couple years ago we go into the Conet project at work and this track in particular we used to terrorize one of our coworkers. We would take turns playing it at low volume while she hunted the entire office for the source. As she would would get closer to my desk I would fade it down so it seemed like it was coming from a different direction. We never did explain what we were doing but eventually she started ignoring it and we didn't really want her to go insane so we stopped doing it.

I almost want to go back to that office and play it just to hear her scream "Fucking Ice Cream truck!" again.

P.S. - One of the Conet recordings was sampled in a Wilco track on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - you can probably figure out which track and numbers recording.

StanleyPain - 2009-04-06

Stupid fucking video, but 5 stars for the audio.

That is unusually unsettling.

cognitivedissonance - 2009-04-07

There's a really AWESOME Chet Atkins cover of this song, and I listen to it frequently. Now I'll think of it a little differently.

papa_november - 2009-04-07

Almost all of these are gone now. The end of the Cold War pretty much wiped them out. You can still hear the Cuban station, and apparently you can on occasion hear the Chinese and Israeli stations, but that's it.
