I had this set too! I loved it back when lego sets didn't assume that you wanted to follow any set of instructions for building things.

Totally had this set too. It came with instructions to build the thing in the picture of the box but also had pictures of other stuff you could build. Kind of marks the beginning of the period when Legos were more than just a box full o' bricks.
