"Bill" must have bigger problems than poverty if he's latched on to this family.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2009-02-15
As someone who lives in East TN - we've got beautiful scenery and some really poor people east of us in the high country. There are some have-nots, but there are some haves with a lot of money in this area as well.
Repomancer - 2009-07-26 How high is "high country?"

Well, just keep voting Republican, and I'm sure all of your troubles will go away.
Caminante Nocturno - 2009-02-15 Probably because people like this keep voting Republicans into office.
Dib - 2009-02-15 Trick question, these people don't vote.
voodoo_pork - 2009-05-14 Trick question: we don't vote.

kingarthur - 2009-02-15
If you believe Appalachia is the only place in America this happens, you win about a billion moron points.
Also, granted that I have endured living in northern Mississippi, but are the subtitles really necessary?
glasseye - 2009-02-15 Also: fucking PEPSI? They don't buy fruits and vegetables, but instead buy PEPSI?
That's incredibly fucked.
Camonk - 2009-02-15 "This happens other places too so WHO GIVES A SHIT"
kingarthur - 2009-02-15 Gross generalizations, Syd and Camonk. This happens other places so we should give a shit. Also, I think the subtitles do make them out to be less than what they are, yeah. If you listen, you can understand it pretty easily.
Then again, when we first moved to Mississippi I had a professor who was from the Delta and I could not, for the life of me, understand a damn thing she said. It actually affected my grades, believe it or not. She also used colloquialisms that sounded absolutely absurd. The accents on these guys are mild.
Cleaner82 - 2009-02-15 No, the subtitles are not nessecary. It's a pet peeve of mine that people seem to require subtitles as soon as they're assaulted by anything but a deadpan midwestern drone. It's English. Learn to understand accents. They happen.
KnowFuture - 2009-02-15 There's a really good chance that the place where these people get their Pepsi doesn't have any fruits or vegetables or milk.
You might not like how they vote but I contend that these are among the most fucked-over and a good contender for being THE most misunderstood people in this country. I tend to side liberal on most social issues, I've been directly involved with liberal activist types in organized groups for a good chunk of my life and I have seen next to NO effort made from that bunch to even try to reach out to folks like these. I've heard the kind of people who blanch at anything racist or gaybashing or otherwise "oppressive" making jokes about rural, broke-ass white people.
glasseye - 2009-02-21 Then grow a fucking garden! Seeds are way cheaper than pepsi, and they appear to have plenty of space.
But y'know, that'd be like, work. "Praying" to some magical fairy "god" is far better.

this show could have been so much more if they didn't have to throw Diane Sawyer and her twilight career last gasp for serious recognition into this
chumbucket - 2009-02-15 actually, now that I think on it, it could have been SO much worse, it could have been Katie Couric

Foolish Motorcycle Accident - 2009-02-15
What the fuck is wrong with you people? Caminante, I expect this kind of bullshit from Cleaner and whoever the fuck dickshapedfood is, but for Christ's sake, man. The problem isn't who they vote for. They live in horribly economically depressed areas. They are uneducated, and that is not necessarily their fault. Do you think they give their kid Pepsi for kicks? They don't know better (not to mention Pepsi is way cheaper than milk or healthier drinks). Where the fuck is your compassion, people?
Aelric - 2009-02-15 Sometimes the evil in portal of evil comes out a little too strong from the community. You people are the funniest fuckers on the net but goddamn, you are heartless pricks.
Cleaner82 - 2009-02-15 No one has to give their child Pepsi. Poverty has nothing to do with that.
But okay, whatever, apparently I've cast my lot on some side or something.
Cleaner82 - 2009-02-15 Let me put it this way. I feel many things about this, things which often directly contradict each other. Maybe I highlighted the wrong one. That's fine, I'll take my lumps. It seems I'm held to a low standard anyway.
Which is only bad if you're an overachiever.

StanleyPain - 2009-02-15
You know, I was expecting this to be pretty soul destroying, but it really isn't. They're just poor people trying to get by, though it does irk me they have so many fucking kids when they can't afford it.
Compared to other parts of Appalacia and what it used to be like (think Deliverance-level poverty and ignorance), this is almost....cheery for lack of a better term. Sad, but not what I was expecting.
oogaBooga - 2009-02-15
I'm a bleeding heart liberal and I find myself not giving a flying fuck who these people vote for.
Why are you even talking about politics?

Poor kids. Children should not have to live in that kind of environment. Surely there isn't something someone could do to get them out of there? At least until the parents can pull themselves back up.

I work on contract for the USDA and review stores when they apply for an EBT (foodstamp card) reading machine (or when they are suspected of fraud). I am directly responsible for keeping these people alive.
Enjoy, no matter how many times I talk about how much I hate goony hill folk and/or shiftless ghetto proles, my job and the party I vote for have done a million times more valuable work for these people than you could ever dream of doing. Your party philosophy has always boiled down to letting these people die for their mistakes/lack of gumption/bad luck. I am a better person than you.

So Appalachia is the Balkans of America: A horrible place where history and ignorance runs deep and although you pity the inhabitants you really hope you'll never have to deal with them directly. However, their cultural and musical influence over the rest of the region/world cannot be denied.
The difference being that the Appalachians haven't started any wars or genocides yet.
