Congress is sending money to Paris, France?
They should be giving that money fruit flies right here at home!

Ursa_minor - 2008-10-25

Then maybe we could get in some good fishin' while we're at it.

Deconvolution - 2008-10-25

She did not just diss the good people working on D. melanogaster genetics. Those are fighting words.

minimalist - 2008-10-25

Bitch doesn't even believe in evolution, think she comprehends the first thing about basic research?

"Spending tax dollars to LEARN about stuff? In FRANCE? hat sounds like socialism!"

simon666 - 2008-10-25

As far as I'm concerned, Christopher Hitchens provides the best response to those faith who reject science. You have your faith, and I'll have modern medicine and the hospital.

That's a paraphrase of the sentiment he had. He actually said something like: We'll see how strong your faith is when you chose to go to the hospital.

Seriously though. Those who don't want science can fuck off and live in a cave somewhere.

"Congress pays 18 million dollars on earmarks for pet projects like my bridge or roads to pissant towns in my retarded state of methheads and backwoods rejects. I kid you not! It's true! I took tons of money! I'm a stupid cunt who definitely deserves to die!"

Camonk - 2008-10-25

You know, I think I slipped out character at the end, there.

simon666 - 2008-10-25

I appreciate your intellectual honesty.

IrishWhiskey - 2008-10-25

"You've heard about the bridges"
Yeah. We did. That famous Bridge to Nowhere. The one that YOU LOBBIED FOR AND KEPT THE MONEY FROM!

And if that wasn't breaking your damn hypocrisy meter off the scales already, the fruit fly research she's suggesting should be cut to help special needs kids, resulted in a breakthrough in IDENTIFYING GENETIC RISK FACTORS FOR AUTISM!!!

Jesus, I don't think I can take this much longer. Nov 4th better get here before I end up just completely losing it.

fluffy - 2008-10-25

Yeah exactly

ProfessorChaos - 2008-10-25

it better get here, and Mccain/Palin better lose

Chet - 2008-10-25

That stunned me as well. How does she clear her memory to ignore that? Is she at all aware of the words coming out of her mouth?

IrishWhiskey - 2008-10-25

Truthiness is tearing apart our country, and I don't mean the argument over who came up with the word…

It used to be, everyone was entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts. But that's not the case anymore. Facts matter not at all. Perception is everything. It's certainty. People love the President because he's certain of his choices as a leader, even if the facts that back him up don't seem to exist. It's the fact that he's certain that is very appealing to a certain section of the country. I really feel a dichotomy in the American populace. What is important? What you want to be true, or what is true?…
- Stephen Colbert (2005)

McCain may want to continue many of Bush's policies, but he's a very different man. Sarah Palin on the other hand, is Bush in a pageant sash.

yoyo1 - 2008-10-25

YEAH! What about those fucking bridges anyway? I see them everywhere!

fatatty - 2008-10-25

Obviously because fruit flies are small, any research on them couldn't possibly have benefits to the public at large. Let me just do a random google search here...

Ok there we are:

http://localtechwire.com/business/local_tech_wire/biotech/stor y/1809660/

The discovery, made in Drosophila fruit flies may lead to advances in understanding autism spectrum disorders, as recently, human neurexins have been identified as a genetic risk factor for autism.

Sarah Palin, why do you hate our nation's autistic children?

RomancingTrain - 2008-10-25

Because 'lil babby Trog has the downs and if drosophila research only helps them then fuck it.

Simian Pride - 2008-10-25

Even better, this study was on fruit flies as agricultural pests.

http://www.napavalleyregister.com/articles/2008/04/09/news/loc al/doc47fc6ca1ad0ee555305173.txt

“The Olive Fruit Fly has infested thousands of California olive groves and is the single largest threat to the U.S. olive and olive oil industries,” he said. “I secured 8,000 for olive fruit fly research and irradiation in the (fiscal year 2008) appropriations bill for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The USDA will use some of that funding for their research facility in France. This USDA research facility is located in France because Mediterranean countries like France have dealt with the Olive Fruit Fly for decades, while California has only been exposed since the late 1990s. This is not uncommon; the USDA has several international research facilities throughout the world, including Australia, China and Argentina.”

This study would benefit farmers (=RealAmericans = the Republican base!) directly! Why do you hate real america, Sarah?

fatatty - 2008-10-25

Well since we're on the subject let me even better myself:

http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2007-06/uosc-sff060707. php

In a triumph for pests, scientists have figured out how to make the fruit fly live longer.

But humans still may get something out of the deal. As reported online in Nature Chemical Biology, the discovery that a single protein can inhibit aging holds implications for human longevity and for treatment of some of the world’s most feared diseases.

I'm pretty sure helping not just autistic people or farmers but ALL OF HUMANITY is pretty worthwhile research.

I kid you not.

I suppose when you don't believe in evolution and the fact that all life on this planet shares common genes and building blocks this might seem like a confusing way to perform scientific research.

Vote for Palin, where all research will be limited to the confines of the Word of God. The only real scientific text book available today.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-10-26

Pfthh. You don't need to extend human life. You earn it through prayer like all those people in the Bible! If you don't live to 900, it's because God didn't love you enough!

mashedtater - 2008-10-26

You know, any important research can sound frivolous when stripped down to bare bones explanations that don't even mention the reason.

"Here we are studying slightly abnormal cells! WHO CARES!"

Meerkat - 2008-10-25

She's kind of a twat.

Ursa_minor - 2008-10-25

I'm waiting for Cena_mark to come in and start addressing people by their cleverly modified screen names, i.e. - ursa_minor = ursa_RETARD, Meerkat = QUEERkat, baleen = GAYleen, Simian pride = IDIOT pride, IrishWhiskey = IrishSTUPID, etc...

The countdown begins.

Lurchi - 2008-10-25

Gayleen! That's a good one. (No offense.)

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-10-25

When is it finally going to drill into that thick skull of hers that she can't get away with this as easily anymore?

Mayberry Pancakes - 2008-10-25

SCIENCE? Fuck that shit!

Hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate.

godot - 2008-10-25

There were no campaign funds for a scientific advisor after the the makeup lady was paid off. Seriously, Palin has no scientific advisor.

Drosophila melanogaster is in the top 3 model organisms for biological research. It's THE single most important model for multicellular genetics, development, and some niche fields like natural neural networks and physiology of vision. About 75% of known human disease genes have a recognizable match in the genetic code of fruit flies, according to Wiki.

Anyone kvetching about money spent on fruit fly research is profoundly ignorant of how multiple research teams working on well-selected model organisms advances knowledge faster than a scattershot approach.

Lurchi - 2008-10-25

Also used to teach innocent children about EVILution.

Severian - 2008-10-25

Willful ignorance is not something most people are proud of.

Pillager - 2008-10-25

You don't live near republicans do you?

Ignorance IS bliss to them.

waxeater - 2008-10-26

Whoever's responsible for that single laugh after she mentions the fruit flies seems pretty delighted with their ignorance.

Lurchi - 2008-10-25

HEY!!!!

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-10-25

Waiting for the now typical Palin shitstorm lashback in 3...2...

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-10-25

Also she is proof positive that we need higher fucking standards in our chosen leaders...did she ever take a science course?

SolRo - 2008-10-26

yes, you've seen people like her in your into science classes...the blank stare, the constant texting, the mysterious disapearance from class before the drop deadline

Baldr - 2008-10-25

Tomorrow, I will take a vial of 25 fruit flies, and I will quickly transfer it into another vial; then count the number of flies that died since the previous transfer. I will do this, on average, 325 times every day for the next two months without a day off.

I do this because my lab is interested in genetic interventions that extend life span, and I have to use this method to determine how much longer the Drosophila will live.

Why do we try to make fruit flies live longer? Because, everything appears to age in the same way (due to evolution), and it's faster to try out these interventions in Drosophila than it is in mice, monkeys, or humans.

Tomorrow I will go to the lab and continue an experiment with fruit flies to try to find a way to help everyone have longer and healthier lives, including Sarah Palin and her supporters.

Right now, I hope the experiment fails.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2008-10-25

Baldr the scientist.

Aoi - 2008-10-25

Baldr lets fly with the syringes with such glee because of those test tubes. They've doomed us all (digitally).

Secret Messiah - 2008-10-25

Those idiot scientists are using mice, kid you not mice!, to do some sort of "research" around the world! Fucking mice I kid you not, little ones that can't possibly be useful.

Can't wait to see how they can put a positive spin on this. You'd think this can't possibly be spun, but every time she says something retarded they manage to somehow give it some RPM.

Gojira1000 - 2008-10-25

Palin doesn't understand science, just like me! She's a real American and has my vote! There's no science in the Bible, after all!

Who needs to spin it?

Secret Messiah - 2008-10-25

Goddamnit, you're right. The people that support her support what she said. Fuck

futurebot - 2008-10-25

Anti-science aside, this is your plan to save the economy? A bold stand against the fruit fly lobby?

If history is any guide, hopefully the fruit fly lobby will be the new ACORN of right-wing boogeymen. I want to hear Freep complaining about this constantly.

teethsalad - 2008-10-25

it'd be hard for her to say anything else that would make me hate her even more than the undying, eternal hatred i have for her complete lack of intellectual curiosity and her inability to comprehend and retain the basic knowledge base that should be standard for a congressional page, let alone a major party's VP candidate

Deplorable - 2008-10-25

Goddamnit I can't type enough A's in rage.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-10-26

I would really like to imagine the campaign bus 30 minutes later:

Palin: I goofed again, didn't I?
McCain: I'll say. Whatever. Can I get another scotch?

And then he gets wasted and passes out in front of Fox News.

waxeater - 2008-10-26

Take THAT, science!

Hailey2006 - 2008-10-26

Isn't her baby developmentally disabled?

Random - 2008-10-26

What a dumb ho.
