The original NES version (from Tengen) was suprior because it had two player co-op and vs. modes. Also it used the Konami code! If you put it in you can...change the color of the pieces.
I thought I was pretty good at the NES version of Tetris. I cold get into the 400,000 point range if the pieces were in my favor.
Then I got Nintendo Power and saw some guy in BFE get some obscene score like 840,000.
My hopes at becoming a Tetris Olympiad for the American Full Contact Tetris team were dashed and it was then I knew that I would have to make room for better players who were more skilled to compete internationally.
By the time Barcelona rolled around in 1992, I secretly bought a plane ticket to cheer them on from the stands. America did their best but they only got Silver. The Gold went to the Croatian Dream Team. They were fantastic.
I think what makes this commercial interesting is that they have to put in so much action, and there's very little footage of the game itself.
Tetris is the greatest game of all time, but you'd never know it if someone simply described it to you, or you watched twenty seconds of it being played in between mcdonalds commercials.
