...or not. they're kinda ho-hum.

Sputum - 2008-07-24

I don't know what to think anymore. My mind is blown.

Fecund - 2008-07-24

Cute, but Stephen is wrong. While none can be used to mean 'not one' it is also proper to use it to mean 'not any', which takes the plural verb.

Camonk - 2008-07-24

I'm pretty sure you're actually wrong. But it's often douchy to correct speech, whose grammar is looser.

Cite your source for none meaning not any and taking a plural verb, please, liar.

simon666 - 2008-07-24

i almost corrected your use of 'whose' to modify 'speech'. jeez i suck.

From the second link:
"People opposing the plural use base their argument on the fact that none comes from the Old English word an, meaning “one.” But the citational evidence against restricting none is overwhelming. None has been used as both a singular and plural pronoun since the ninth century. The plural usage appears in the King James Bible as well as the works of John Dryden and Edmund Burke and is widespread in the works of respected writers today."

Grammar correctors (a.k.a. prescriptivists) are nearly always wrong from a historical sense. English is much too fluid for rigid rule sets.

Sniglet this.

I was amazed to see that Rich Hall is alive, known in Britain, and still looks the same.

lolcoolj - 2008-07-24

I enjoy Alan's resistance to every correction Steven lays on him. You're wrong Alan. No I'm not. Its entertaining in an annoying little brother sort of way.

chumbucket - 2008-07-24

grammar correctors have had too many anal exams

heyitslozeau - 2008-07-24

this isnt funny.

cognitivedissonance - 2008-07-24

Lest you forget, Fry actually was an English teacher for a semester, so he's only acting out of English teacher ingrained impulse.

Alektorophobic - 2008-07-25

It's always funny to watch Alan get flustered.
