My gateway drug, close to 20 years ago. Picked it up on VHS at a comic book shop in Duluth, Minnesota for around .00.

Got it on DVD! Nanana! it's easy to find nowadays. I wish my kids were old enough to watch that.

Akira is one of the best anime movies that doesn't make any damned sense.

Jeff Fries - 2008-07-05

It makes perfect sense, it's about a teenager who becomes so angry he turns into a universe.

TeflonDoc - 2008-07-04

Five stars for description.

Gerhard - 2008-07-04

Saw this in the Regina public library theater, 1990-91? Didn't make a lick of sense but it stuck with me.

Gerhard - 2008-07-04

I never noticed the Mad Max references till this viewing, nice!

phalsebob - 2008-07-04

I'll just come right out and say this. As the best anime movie ever, Akira is merely watchable. Congrats on mediocrity.

Mr.Graves - 2008-07-05

Mediocrity is when the critic forgets the context of what is now considered common, to be unheard of and groundbreaking when it is first introduced.

Akira is perfectly understandable; it was five 2 inch thick graphic novels before it was a movie. Because they were pushing into new territory they couldn't assume they would get 2 or 3 movies to flesh out the entire storyline.

Harveyjames - 2008-07-05

Yeah, they really tried to get way too much of the comic into one film, especially considering how much space of that film is given over to action setpieces and so on.

I love Akira, though! I'll never forget watching the scene with the dogs chasing the guy through the traffic jam at the start when I was 9 or 10 years old. That was one of the most important film-watching experiences of my childhood, right there.

I especially love the futuristic CD-JUKEBOX.

Harveyjames - 2010-10-22

The best anime movie ever is probably something by Hayao Miyazaki. That this is the best one is the kind of thing people said fifteen years ago when there were only like six to choose from in the US VHS market.

StanleyPain - 2008-07-05

Akira is definitely one of the better anime movies, no doubt. There is always a space in my heart for the old Steamline Pictures dub, though.

Merzbau - 2008-07-05

DO it NOWWW

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-07-05

This was the fuel, and Sailor Moon was the fire.

Or maybe Sailor Moon was the fuel, and Devil Hunter Yohko was the fire.

No, this was definitely the fuel.

RomancingTrain - 2008-07-06

Some people say this is the best anime movie, they haven't seen Sailor Moon S.

dr_rock - 2008-07-05

First time I watched this it was about 1992 and I was trippin balls on microdots. Good times.

leifthorrsman - 2008-07-06

I never really knew of anime much until I seen this movie. It was then I realized there was much more to anime than monsters that come out of balls and big long scenes of men grunting as they prepared to unleash streams of energy out of their hands.

Akira was one of the greats. Altho I also prefer the original dub.

oogaBooga - 2009-05-24

This and Key the Metal Idol were the first 2 movies to get me into anime.
