This really is the "Citizen Kane" of movies about pickle-craving protozoan zombies. Del Tenney wanted to do an atomic age zombie film, and you can see traces of it here and there, such as how sodium (salt) will stop the reanimated dead. But it's not until the end that you see the Tina voodoo doll on Elaine's dresser, and then you realize she flirted with voodoo and unleashed goofy shuffling hell. Then, on a second viewing, everything starts making as much sense as it's going to. Eulabelle, our ersatz voodoo priestess, is responsible for steering the white guys to their solution, plus persuading Hank that he has to call ALL the sodium distributors and not just some of them.
