Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-04-30

I don't even know where to begin on this clip...

He sounds like he's either had a mild stroke or has decided to take up being a grizzled jazzman. He makes wild claims that Darwinists claim evolutionary theory explains planetary rotation and gravitational pull. He then comforts us because the economy of America will never sour.

This is the perfect example of a human being that insulates themselves against all evidence of anything, ever.

fluffy - 2008-04-30

He also tells us that people are getting fired for saying that Darwinism doesn't explain why the planets orbit? what?

afp3683 - 2008-04-30

Darwinism = every branch of science

jesustweak - 2008-04-30

If some academic really thinks that it is important to announce that a 19th century naturalist doesn't fly around pushing planets in their orbits, they should immediately be fired and rushed to the Discovery Institute where the experts can quarantine the stupid. Besides, everyone knows that it is the exclusive job of Jebus to fly around and push the planents.

Actually, it is amazing that he went nearly 9 minutes without mentioning NAZIs.

Billy Buttsex - 2008-04-30

You guys MUST be joking. What he's referencing is how Darwin's theories are all subject to the laws of the universe, and how biological processes are as well. It's a common ID theme, because they use the laws of the universe to suggest that evolution across species is impossible.

You guys are ignorant.

Clever Name - 2008-04-30

So that's what he meant by "Darwinism doesn't explain gravity." I feel like such an idiot for not picking up on that.

jesustweak - 2008-04-30

As one of the ignorant, I have a simple request. Perhaps you can enlighten us with an example of a physical law that prevents speciation? Hint: The second law of thermodynamics only applies to isolated systems.

halon - 2008-04-30

"Scotland is the most intelligent race in the world"

Ladies and gentlemen, Ben Stein.

takewithfood - 2008-05-01

Billy, that is absolutely not what he's referencing. He said in this clip that he's against the claim that "Darwinism explains everything". He goes on to say that "Darwinism doesn't explain the laws of gravity, Darwinism doesn't explain the laws of thermodynamics."

This is a blatant strawman. There aren't any scientists out there claiming that Darwin explains everything. He's conjuring up antagonism and it is fucking embarrassing for him.

Maybe you WANT him to be suggesting that physics and evolution don't mix (which, by the way, is a gross misunderstanding of evolution; if you don't know that off-hand then your school system has failed you miserably) but that flat out isn't the case.

I honestly enjoy that you post here with views that clash with the mainstream here at PoETV - I'm really not being sarcastic, I think it's great and frankly pretty brave - but don't stand up for Ben Stein just because you think he's on your side. He's making an ass of himself and anyone who legitimately has the stones to challenge evolution would do well to distance themselves from him and his movie.

jesustweak - 2008-05-01

Working biologists challenge evolution every time they observe a new species or sequence its genome. It doesn't take stones, just data. Creationists who deny solid scientific observations in a desperate attempt to support their bronze age myths don't need Ben to make an ass of them. I also think it is wonderful and progressive that Billy Buttsex's homeschooling involves a computer.

eatenmyeyes - 2008-05-01

Billy, if you kill yourself I will send you a lovely laundry hamper.

takewithfood - 2008-05-01

jesustweak, "challenge" probably wasn't the right word. I hoped it was clear that when I said "the stones to challenge evolution" I wasn't including the scientific process. There is obviously a chasm of difference between the scientific process and outright denying an entire theory because it makes your religious beliefs look silly. From what I can gather from the trailer, Stein's movie is built around the same asinine confusion: that bad science isn't been thrown because it's bad science, but because scientists can't allow anyone to poke holes in their beloved Darwinism.

And I think it does take balls to be that brutally wrong in public just to make a buck.

Billy Buttsex - 2008-05-01

Takewithfood, I think what he's trying to say is that Darwin can only explain so much, but it never explained how the universe started, or how his own theory began, which is CRUCIAL to the whole "God didn't do this" argument. Even leading scientists dealing with Biochemical Predestination (such as Dean Kenyon) have jumped to the ID bandwagon because Darwinism doesn't hold up when put into that light, and I think that labeling Ben Stein and all other Creationists as idiots is unfair.

You'd do well to at least rent a movie like "Unlocking the Mystery of Life," which explains these theories better than Ben Stein ever could. Mr. Stein is a hero, because he's fighting against a totalitarian thought-control machine that's eventually going to ostracize him as a loonie.

God bless him, because he's fighting for freedom of thought and education, and that's a tough battle to fight.

Mordant - 2008-05-01

“His followers claim [Darwinism] explains everything including astronomy.”

Name one person who says that you stupid lying fuck.

Name one person who was fired for saying the planets stay in their orbits for something other than Darwinism.

baleen - 2008-05-01

Billy, you moron. Science does not have an agenda other than science.
It is not concerned with "freedom of thought," it is SCIENCE you FUCKING IDIOT.

takewithfood - 2008-05-01

As Mordant said, no credible scientist is actually trying to argue that Darwinism DOES or SHOULD explain everything, such as the laws of physics.

Furthermore, the question of whether or not any scientific discovery refutes the existence of God is NOT the concern of science - it is strictly a theological question. Science has no agenda. It is a process.

I'm sick to shit of people treating science as a belief system. You don't have to believe in gravity to fall off a cliff, and you don't need to believe in evolution to understand how it works.

minimalist - 2008-05-01

No, no it's true: as a biologist, I sit cackling upon my throne of skulls as I hurl my latest manuscript, regarding thermodynamic phase transitions in phospholipid membranes, into the eye of his mewling, bloated, and weak "god."

My next project (as a biologist) is to approach gravity from a Darwinist perspective, overthrowing the obvious truth that angels move the planets and demons drag objects down to earth (Hell), to supplant it with, I dunno, monkeys or something. It's an easy life, being part of the worldwide science conspiracy.

DOWN WITH GOD

phalsebob - 2008-08-20

Billy, can you reference any biologist that claims that evolution isn't subject to physical laws, or an even more amusing (and more likely) reference of a creationist explaining how evolution makes some kind of supernatural claim?

Frank Rizzo - 2008-04-30

Im still waiting for him to go "....GOTCHA!!! haha... just fucking with you America!"

FatFatuousNation - 2008-04-30

I watched his show as a kid and thought he was cool. I feel somehow betrayed

ProfessorChaos - 2008-05-01

Yeah. I used to want to win his money.

Now i just have to resit the temptation to hunt him down and mug him in a back alley somewhere.

Aelric - 2008-04-30

ben stein going senile or not, i still gotta love the ferg.

Walt Henderson - 2008-05-01

Ben Stein is an irritating little gnome. Also, his voice makes my nose bleed. 5 stars.

NoCode - 2008-05-01

For bleeding nose, use Clear Eyes.

kelpfoot - 2008-05-01

I thought Stein was just being a twat when he made Expelled, but now I think he's become demented or insane.

It makes this video less funny and more depressing.

NineEleven - 2008-05-01

For craaazy eyes, use Ben Stein eyes. Wowww.

NoCode - 2008-05-01

Wow, what a total douche.

I knew I could never, never, ever see Expelled when I saw the first trailer for it on TV, and spent the next 20 minutes yelling to my apartment walls about how ABIOGENESIS IS NOT EVOLUTION WHAT THE HOLY FUCK.

Ben Stein's willful ignorance is more than enough to turn me into a screaming crazy apartment lady.

baleen - 2008-05-01

me too. I want to cut off my shlong and beat his traitory jewy face with it.

meamlegion - 2008-05-01

No one thinks that darwinian evolution explains physics... what a fucking idiot. I really don't know why he is famous.

baleen - 2008-05-01

Buehler buehler. But really their is a part of me that thinks that Creationism is just highbrow televangelism and half of these people are laughing to the bank.

Mordant - 2008-05-01

Definitely evil enough. -1 star because of Craig Ferguson’s crappy jokes.

Couldn't watch any more after Ben got to his "the real heroes are the troops" spiel. My eyeballs rolled out of my head.
