The public imagination's portrayal of bad people in the 80s was so much nicer than the horrors of what was actually happening.

When it's done here it's funny, when it's done in "Hot Rod", not so much.

So I guess a lot of middle class people thought that West Side Story was pretty accurate, and so copied it for their own portrayals of gang violence. Nice.
