When Vietnam vets came to speak to our class in high school, tell us about their war experience, and give us that indescribable STARE, I never dreamed that someday I'd see that same stare in the eyes those who were 4 or 5 year old kids at the time.

How many years do we have to wait before letting these guys speak in high schools?

baleen - 2008-03-25

You want veterans of the Iraq war to talk to children? What are you a fucking hippie? Burn in hell, traitor.

baleen - 2008-03-25

but this is a great submission and it made me cry like a baby. thanks.

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-03-25

I can't articulate how painful this is.

Mike Tyson?! - 2008-03-25

TRAITOR TO AMERICA!! HOW DARE THEY?

There, now you don't have to check out the You Tube comments.

Syd Midnight - 2008-03-29

The few I dared to glance at weire either "BU$HITLER" or, in a few cases, the soldiers themselves commenting on their own testimony. Nothing juicy, just "I got that one guys name wrong" or "It was May not March" stuff.

On one hand, these clips have received surprisingly little attention so far. On the other, what chickenhawk wants to be the first in line? I think they just don't watch it.

Whitewater5 - 2008-03-25

about 3:20 into the 4th video is the best one, although the one about soldiers dropping weapons on corpses to frame their civilian victims was pretty godawful too

everyone in america needs to see these

SARS - 2008-03-25

This may sound cliche, ridiculous, or over-zealous... but I firmly believe that Bush, and his major players, should face the possibility of execution for their numerous crimes and criminal lack of remorse.

Normally, I oppose the death penalty. But there are some people who have committed acts so grievous - and stand to get away with it (win) - that they should be pulled from life, so that they cannot continue to play the system and assail humanity [as a whole].

We should keep corporeal punishment a rarity; to be used only in the instances of the most abhorrent offenses; to punish those with the power to commit said offenses - to keep our leaders in check.

kingarthur - 2008-03-26

The first five or so on the list should be Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, and Bremer.

mcsancherson - 2008-03-25

can we please keep these yammering old hippie bitches the fuck off-camera. whose anti-war movement is this, really?

SARS - 2008-03-25

before this war, she was relegated to working the second-hand bookstore and making natural dyes for the campus market.
She missed the last 60's. This is her time.

AgentOrange - 2008-03-25

I would love a video, in MST3K format, of Bush and the rest watching these testimonials. What could they possibly say?

dancingshadow - 2008-03-25

I'm pretty sure Cheney's response would be, "So ?"

EvilHomer - 2008-03-25

I hate to say it, but I'm not gonna watch this. I don't know how that bodes for the future of me and my social, political, mental, and moral consciousness, but I just can't watch this. Five years ago, two years ago, heck, one month ago, sure, Democracy Now + Iraq Veterans would be on the top of my "to watch" list. I suppose it should be now, too, all things considered.

But I can't do it, and I honestly don't know how to feel about that realization.

Whitewater5 - 2008-03-25

quit being a pussy and face the world

EvilHomer - 2008-03-25

Whitewater- that's exactly the problem. *insert weeaboo emoticon for mildly distressed*

takewithfood - 2008-03-25

I don't think you have to watch it. In a way, I think being afraid of it is part of the message, part of the point. It _should_ be uncomfortable. Whether you're a soldier or a civilian, an American or not, anyone who's human should be uncomfortable. And though I still suggest you do, I don't think you owe it to anyone to actually sit through it.

Also, I think the emoticon you're looking for is -_-'

Billy Buttsex - 2008-03-25

Evilhomer, these guys are the horror horror stories. I know plenty of people who've come back and said there's nothing to do, so they sit around playing video games and flirting with the Iraqi girls. It's not always this bad.

Horrors in an occupied territory do exist, but they're not always as bad as the shocking stuff you hear in the stories. Either way, we all wished you protection, so you're covered.

EvilHomer - 2008-03-25

Yeah, I know. Most of the guys I've talked to say it's 99% "being bored as hell" and the craziest stories they come back with involve absinthe, German prostitutes, French base guards, and eight o'clock meetings the next morning with four star generals. If anything traumatic happened on their watch, it doesn't show. BUT STILL.

It's bad enough my girlfriend wants to go see Stop-Loss with me this weekend, so I figure this can wait until I'm at least out of AIT.

Whitewater5 - 2008-03-26

hey who would have thunk it, if you sit around in a base all day you don't see the horrors going on in the country you destroyed! thx for the info billy

kingarthur - 2008-03-26

Billy Buttsex, practicing for that job as Bushie press corps officer!

Syd Midnight - 2008-03-26

Billy, I believe those are called REMFs.

takewithfood - 2008-03-26

I don't think anyone who spoke in this clip means to imply that every soldier in Iraq goes through the same experiences. The point is that even if these stories are rare, _they still happened_ and that is enough of an atrocity that every-day people should stand up and take notice.

I accept that "these things happen" - I'm not going to pretend that you can ever have a calm, orderly military conflict where everything is sunshine bunnies and rainbows and nothing ever goes wrong - but there is a massive fucking difference between accepting the fact that atrocities are bound to happen and being complacently comfortable with them.

JAGuarinc - 2008-03-25

Ummm.... everyone's aware that all but one of these guys were fake, right? Right?

I guess not.

Several weren't who they claimed to be (civilians assuming a vets identity), others never served where they say they did in Vietnam, still others never left the U.S. at all. Of the ones who were where they said they were, their statements were in direct opposition to others in their unit. "The CIA is covering it up!"

Some were motivated by altruistic reasons, trying to get the war over earlier by telling amazing stories about it. "It's so bad, we HAVE to end it!" Some were simply seeking attention. Perhaps one of the first incarnations of cam whores.

Regardless, they did a great disservice to Vietnam era vets by contributing (if not starting) the image of a crazed, loner homeless Vietnam vet driven mad by what he witnessed. Not that Rambo helped either. They also provided lots of ammunition for those who would deny anything bad ever happened in Vietnam. "Look at all the fakes, that's fake too!"

War itself is abhorrent enough without their contemptuous falsehoods adding to the mix.

JAGuarinc - 2008-03-25

Ummm... oops. I saw 'Winter Soldier', my mind blanked and I assumed it was the Vietnam Era one. My apologies.

/note to self, "Read description first you idiot."

RockBolt - 2008-03-25

Maybe watch the damn thing before going on a diatribe about it, you walking epitome of why the world is like this

Mike Tyson?! - 2008-03-26

Really stupid, would ignore again! A++++++++++++

kingarthur - 2008-03-26

Go ignorance! See how far it's gotten the country!

SARS - 2008-03-26

I WANT OUR PISS, RETARD next time bother to watch the video retard

Ryo-Cokey - 2008-03-26

It does kind of make me wonder why they called this one the Winter Soldier testimonials as well, though.

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-03-26

You'd be a disappointment to your nation if you weren't so emblematic of it.

Syd Midnight - 2008-03-29

I still can't get over this line: "I can't speak Arabic, but I can speak Human."

Vicious - 2008-05-14

I'm not watching it because it's too goddamn long. So there.
