My god, and this is only a clip.

what

Pandatronic - 2007-07-10

Brief plot synopsis (based on memory):

Okay, so there's these two warring clans of raccoons. They stop fighting and unite when they realize that their conflict is because humans have reduced their environment to the point where they're almost out of land to live in. So the raccoons, all of which randomly change from realistic to cartoony appearance and whose males all have visible genitalia, launch a 5-year plan to spy on the humans and fight back. All raccoons have the ability to transform into anything they want, they've just forgotten how to, so they send scouts off to find the old masters of transformation while the rest of them train what little skills they have. And the raccoons stop reproducing so they won't run out of room; this is illustrated by a montage of female raccoons beating up males trying to rape them. Anyways, the raccoons put together a TV to spy on the humans, and eventually become good enough at transformation to disguise themselves as humans. Also, they can distend their genitalia at will. (The english dub thinly veils this by calling them "pouches")

So, now versed in transformation skills, they decide to fight the new development that's going to destroy the forest they live in. How? By murdering the construction workers! After a rampage which destroys much of the construction equipment and results in the death of several workers, the elder raccoons disapprove of violence so they try and scare the workers away by disguising themselves as mythological creatures. Unfortunately, by the time spring rolls around the raccoons end up breeding anyways and they no longer have enough room to live. Cue the arrival of the three masters (the three old raccoons in this clip, one of which bears a resemblance to Wilford Brimley). The masters decide that they'll scare the humans away from developing the forest by sweeping the human cities with their elaborate illusion powers. After a 10-minute long acid trip one of the masters dies from overexertion and the raccoons retreat. But it was all for nothing: a new theme park claims the whole illusion was a promotion for the park, and the rumors of ghosts is forgotten.

The raccoons are desperate now, and the elders can't control them very longer. It turns out the man that runs the theme park is actually a fox (foxes have powers like raccoons, too). The foxes turned themselves into humans and now live angst us, using their wit and magic powers to live extravagant lives of wealth and power. The foxes urge the raccoons to do the same, but they refuse.

Knowing that their doom is inevitable, the raccoons take their last stand. One of the elders turns his enormous genitalia into a boat and commits suicide, riding his boat off into oblivion along with the raccoons that joined him. The militant raccoons attack a SWAT team by inflating their genitals to the size of small cars and trying to crush them to death; they are all slaughtered by the cops. The few remaining raccoons decide to contact the media and prove their existence, although it is now too late to do anything. Deciding to go out with a bang, the raccoons pool their remaining power and turn the industrialized island back to the way it was centuries ago, if only for a few minutes. After that the raccoons turn into humans and live ordinary human lives, occasionally running off into the bushes to play and dance with their brethren.

So yeah, awesome, surreal, depressing movie.

-3:34: dude he totally turned his scrotum into a toad

You can get this uncut on DVD in the UK, time to pick it up methinks.

Screwtape - 2007-07-10

The American DVD is uncut as well. The dub track simply refers to it as his "pouch". The animation is unaltered. I forget what the sub-track refers to it as, but if I recall correctly, they pretty much leave it uncensored.

Studio Ghibli had some really good LSD.

Spastic Avenger - 2008-01-13

you don't need LSD when it comes to folklore. I'd love to see an animated film based on British folklore and culture, but half of it is probably too terrifying.

I don't even have the energy to ask what the hell is wrong with Japan. I can only shake my head and wonder.

Portaxx - 2007-07-18

"Tanukis have giant balls and shapeshifting powers" was kind of a running joke in old Japanese stories. This is one of the things where you don't need to say "LOL JAPAN WUT" because it's just based on old mythology.

Disaster - 2007-07-30

i loved this scene the music is so awsome and their transformations were really cool..

tamago - 2007-08-17

I'm totally buying this movie now. It looks awesome.

tamago - 2007-08-20

Bought this a couple of days ago and it's as awesome as I thought it would be. Also, for those of you who thought he did, Miyazaki didn't direct this. It was Isao Takahata, the same dude who directed Grave of the Fireflies. Though the Miyazaki tag is still technically accurate since it is a Studio Ghibli film.
