Let me try to think of something poe-ish. Uh, that sapphire is harder than your mom's... uh... dick?

Waterjets are awesome and there are even ones made for hobbyists that you could put in a small workshop. The downside of them is they've got a conical kerf, so if you are (as I was) cutting 1/4" steel plate, you need to grind down the edge to get it flat.

Also, they are fucking expensive to run. An hour running a machine like this will use about 50 pounds of garnet, 40 gallons of water and about 25 kWh of electricity.

Then, after it gets used a bunch, the tray under the cutting hexacomb needs to be manually shoveled out like a goddamn stables except instead of horse shit it's garnet and whatever you've been cutting.

Very glad I wasn't responsible for the maintenance of the machine I was using!
