So how did Goose get killed by the canopy but Maverick ejected just fine?

I always assumed it was because the pilot sits forward so that when his seat fires there is more room above his head (the canopy is more separated) whereas the RIO is closer to the canopy so could potentially eject right into it, breaking his neck.
