Much more like the old Chappellle.

For a while, he reminded me of Lenny Bruce reading court transcripts up on stage. It was, like, "You guys see this is crazy, right? You're on my side, right?"

He actually took took shots at someone who poses a real threat to his career, this time. Maybe he finally figured out what "punching down" means?

Cena_mark - 2022-11-13

Lenny Bruce was arrested for his stand up. Chappelle has earned millions and contends with ineffectual calls for cancellation on Twitter. Chappelle is no Lenny Bruce.

Binro the Heretic - 2022-11-13

I was comparing Chappelle spending an hour-long special complaining about trans people trying to cancel him to Bruce reading the court transcripts of his trial.

ashtar. - 2022-11-14

Let's team-fuck this guy, John. Do you want mouth or ass?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-11-14

Also, this guy.

Crackersmack - 2022-11-14

Great comedy is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-11-15

>>>Great comedy is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable.

Bad comedy does the same thing.

Adham Nu'man - 2022-11-14

Video unavailable in my country, but I'll 5 star it cause Chapelle is great.

Gmork - 2022-11-14

This motherfucker was funny for five seconds during the 90's. That's it.

Lef - 2022-11-14

He was funny and topical, not easy in this age.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-11-14

The last time Chapelle hosted SNL it was two years ago, the Saturday when the networks finally called the election for Biden. It was one of the few times I've tuned in to live tv in the last few years , and it made me feel good about America for just a minute. to see a black man on that stage in that place and time... and he was good.

One of the things that really pisses me off about this controversy isn't really on Dave Chapelle. To me, the most irresponsible moment from The Closer was when he endorsed TERFISM. "I'm team TERF". This is like, after Charlottesville, declaring yourself "Team Nazi". It wasn't a joke, and it wasn't meant to be joke. That means that everyone who talks about this controversy in terms of "anti-trans jokes", including the majority of articles I've seen from professional journalists, don't understand the first thing about why trans people are upset. It's not because they are humorless and can't take a joke. It's because Dave Chapelle very unironically endorsed a group that actively seeks to restrict transpeople's access to Healthcare. TERFs are feminists who believe that transwomen are a threat to CIS women, the same way some people believe that gay marriage is a threat to straight marriage. It's pretty cerebral.

I don't really believe in canceling someone who accidentally said something racist, which is how it usually goes., but Chapelle basically endorsed a hate group, and so yeah, he's canceled. I didn't watch SNL, and I didn't watch the video.

A lot of CIS people clearly don't understand TERF politics, and maybe that includes Dave Chapelle. I'm always ready to forgive him if he knows he did wrong. But I don't forget. In 1985 on HBO, Louie Anderson told a joke about Rock Hudson's funeral that was so loathsome, I have boycotted all things Louie Anderson from that day to this.

Crackersmack - 2022-11-14

Nah "terf" is in no way analogous to "nazi", especially since the word "terf" means basically anything now. Terfs are not a hate group or even any kind of organized group at all. It's just a label that gets stuck on anybody that doesn't fully adopt a specific kind of extreme idpol without question.

I love the controversy over "The Closer" because right in the beginning Chappelle makes the most brilliant point about how the media treats Black men's lives as worthless, and it just got skipped over entirely in the uproar about the trans shit, which completely proved his point. It just got completely ignored.

"In our country, you can shoot and kill a n***a, but you better not hurt a gay person’s feelings"

Adham Nu'man - 2022-11-14

Yes, TERFs are exactly like Nazis. Have you seen the TERF concentration camps?

TERFs just recently took over Poland and are moving ever closer to the Russian empire, although they may not be prepared to face the coming winter.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-11-15

You know, when something is analogous to something else, it's always understood that they're different things. It's the nature of

It's true that TERFs have never invaded Poland. If anything I said seemed to imply that TERFs have invaded Poland, I apologize. However, I'd like to point out that none of the Nazis at Charlottesville had ever invaded Poland, either, and most historians believe that, before the Nazis of Germany invaded Poland, there was a period of time when they hadn't done that yet.

If you watch the first episode of Ken Burns new series on the holocaust, you really have to wonder if they're to build an analogy between the rise of National Socialism and the rise of Trumpism. When you compare Trumpism to Hitler's nazis BEFORE the war, there's a whole lot going on there. Really, it might be worth talking about. The difference between german nazis and many other hate groups is that, for a while, the nazis had all the power.

Crackersmack, here's another example of how WORDS MEAN THINGS. TERFs stands for Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist. It applies to radical feminists who are trans Exclusionary, a thing which exists. It's not an official designation, like many other words that mean things.

Crackersmack - 2022-11-15

Why does it get applied to people who are not radical feminists all the time though?

Adham Nu'man - 2022-11-15

It could be that, or maybe they have fuck all to do with Nazis. You know you can disagree with people without calling them Nazis right?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-11-15

Why, yes! Yes, I CAN disagree with someone without calling them Nazis. I didn't actually call anyone a Nazi.

Again, do you guys not know how an analogy works? Yeah, there is a vast difference between seeking to destroy a minority by denying them healthcare and minority status, and and damn near actually murdering them. And they didn't invade Poland.

The analogy didn't directly involve TERFs at all. The point of comparison was Trump's refusal to disavow the white supremacists at Charlottesville, and Chapelle's endorsement of TERFs.

Waugh - 2022-11-14

wow i've never seen garbage host garbage before.

wait... yes, i have.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-11-15

Jesus, Waugh, take pitty on those of us who are trying to navigate this site on our phones.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-11-15

"In our country, you can shoot and kill a n***a, but you better not hurt a gay person’s feelings"

If Dave Chapelle had murdered someone during his Netflix special, I like to think that I would also have been critical of that.

Crackersmack - 2022-11-15

He murdered the most vocal critics of his earlier specials by predicting exactly how they would react to The Closer without even seeing it, and he built-in an acknowledgment of that hypocrisy and racism right into the first few minutes of the hour. And he was proven 100% correct.

It was a work of subversive genius.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-11-15

That made me cringe with my whole body, so I know that it must be great comedy.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-11-15

>>>Why does it get applied to people who are not radical feminists all the time though?

By whom? Try to imagine an alternate universe in which I can truly answer that question, without more information.

I do know that you're not the only person who is having a hard time with the concept of words meaning things. And that the internet is great at finding all the stupidest things anyone ever said, and making the whole discussion about them.
