Was genuinely happy and smiled when I saw the news today.

I hope he kills himself soon.

Cena_mark - 2022-10-13

I agree with you. This is a good thing.

Binro the Heretic - 2022-10-13

He's tried switching the story from, "These people are actors and their kids never existed," to "They're real people and their kids really got killed, but it was still a false flag orchestrated b the government as a pretext to take your guns."

He's still lying.

The only way to stop him from lying is to shut down his show entirely, but that's impossible in the Internet age.

Meerkat - 2022-10-13

He will never stop lying, even if they tossed him in prison he would continue to lie and people(?) would still support and follow him.

I would be surprised if the victims ever get peace. They pretty much have to take the money and move to Ecuador or Thailand or something. If they even get enough of the money.

Meerkat - 2022-10-13

Which reminds me, tarring and feathering should make a comeback.

Cena_mark - 2022-10-13

These people don't mourn like people on TV and movies who've lost a loved one. That means they must be actors.

THIS is the basis of the conspiracy. Jones is an asshole for pushing it, and those who bought into it are tragically disconnected from real human emotion. What do you expect the parents to do, drop to their knees as they scream, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!"?

Cena_mark - 2022-10-13

Deplatforming works. It won't completely destroy his reach, but it is shown to be effective. The Youtube and Facebook bans cut his daily website traffic in half.

TeenerTot - 2022-10-13

Alex Jones will be financially kaput. One of his rabid listeners will front money to keep him "on the air." That rabid listener will push more and more over time to have Jones say what HE wants him to say. ("Hey, it's MY MONEY, asshole. I own you!")
It will end in a terrible, delightful, stupid murder plot on Inside Edition.

Cena_mark - 2022-10-13

He's damaged goods. If these dark money mongers are smart they'll just astroturf some new conspiracy influencers. Jones didn't start this, he built his work and influence off of William Cooper.

Crackersmack - 2022-10-13

Now that you can sue a public figure for actions of unrelated people that were supposedly inspired by their rhetoric I wonder how that applies to the "Bernie Bros are harassing female Hillary Clinton supporters online" situation.

Cena_mark - 2022-10-13

Completely different scenarios. Such intellectual dishonesty to even pretend such instances are comparable. Your post is the Simone Biles of mental gymnastics.

Crackersmack - 2022-10-13

How's it different? You could line up a string of Karens to testify how their lives had been turned upside down by the harassment of Bernie Bros online. Obviously it's to a lesser degree so maybe it's only worth a hundred million.

Cena_mark - 2022-10-13

I don't recall the level of disparagement Bernie Sanders was saying about Hillary during that campaign, but it's nowhere near the level of the lie of a mass shooting never happening. I don't recall Bernie ever making any gross lies about Clinton or her supporters. Bernie Bros were just jerks. Jones on his show, recorded many many times slandered the Sandy Hook parents. Bernie had not. His followers were just zealous and dicks. These are hardly similar.

Cena_mark - 2022-10-13

The reason why the Sandy Hook Parents won was that they could prove Jones' rhetoric and how it tied to their harassment. The Clinton marks can trace no such connection. Another part of lawsuits is being able to prove damages. The Sandy Hook Parents were forced to move multiple times and forced to quit jobs. They have psychological damage on the record. Hillary marks got some harassment, but not on that level, and not in an organized form that can be traced to Bernie as the Sandy Hook harassment can be traced to Jones.

SolRo - 2022-10-13

If any bernbros do anything on the same scale jones did then they should face the same consequences.

Cena_mark - 2022-10-13

Well they didn't. Nice try.

SolRo - 2022-10-13

That’s the point.

Binro the Heretic - 2022-10-14

Oh, fuck all the way off.

Jones told his listeners that these people who had lost their children were part of some globalist plot to enslave them. And he is always telling them to "fight the globalists."

In other words, "Attack your enemies." and "These people are your enemies."

That's a far cry from the Bernie Bros lamenting that the DNC rigged the primaries against their candidate. (Which it sort of did)

Crackersmack - 2022-10-14

He was saying crazy shit that he genuinely believed to be true. He wasn't ordering his listeners to attack anybody.

Binro the Heretic - 2022-10-14

Upon learning he stated outright falsehoods, he never retracted.

He has never told his audience to stop harassing the Sandy Hook parents or the law enforcement officers he said were in on the "false flag."

The closest he's come is saying the parents didn't really want to sue him but were forced to by the people who want to shut him down. He claims some of the plaintiffs came to him and told him that during the trial even though it can be easily proven they avoided all interaction with him.

Spreading misinformation about Sandy Hook was very lucrative for Alex Jones. It was the biggest boost for his ratings and profits since the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

He will keep lying and hurting people as long as it makes him money. The only way to make him stop is to make it unprofitable.

Braze - 2022-10-14

You can 'what if' just about any legal decision; this is why we have judges and juries to decide upon the merits of a case. They call it the legal-rational tradition because it inherently relies on people being rational.

Amos - 2022-10-15

First they came for Alex Jones, and I said nothing, for he was an unhinged conspiracy theorist.

Of course Jones has been the canary in the coal mine before; Jones was the first person to be "deplatformed" from several companies working in concert, as I'm sure you recall. Once the precedent was established, deplatforming became commonplace for far less incendiary reasons than the kind of things Jones says. It'll be the same way here.

What you don't understand, Crackersmack, is that the people you're arguing with here LIKE censorship. They say as much! Do you honestly think that a hateful troglodyte like SolRo is going to be swayed by this kind of argument? He's already over there furiously jacking off to the thought of Alex Jones killing himself, and the thought of more misery visited upon people who disagree with him only turns him on more. Or Cenamark? Fifteen years ago he was a 17-year-old libertarian and now he's a 17-year-old socialist. I suppose this makes him capable of changing, but I wouldn't exactly call it *growing*.

In a few years when you can be sued for denying that a man in a dress is a woman on social media (thereby subjecting trans people to harassment), these same mouth breathers will be cackling and hollering the same way they are now. Why argue with them?

This place used to be pretty cool way back when. Now I visit and, wow, this is the most miserable place on the internet. That's saying something! What happened to you people? Did you all change? Did I?

Cena_mark - 2022-10-15

Alex Jones isn't the canary. He not the first. He's just a very high profile right wingers. Facebook and Co have a long history of shutting down leftwing pages

Binro the Heretic - 2022-10-15

Amos,

Jones was kicked off YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. for MAKING DEATH THREATS.

Those have NEVER been protected free speech.

Nominal - 2022-10-16

Why isn't POE siding with the mass media millionaire who encouraged the decade long harassing of families turned fugitives who already had their souls ripped out by a mass killing?

OH MY WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THIS SITE I DON'T EVEN RECOGNIZE IT ANYMORE!!!

Which long time turd are you, Amos? You are even more worthless than Alex Jones, who at least has the excuse of making millions off defending this shit. You're a garbage human for free.

Cena_mark - 2022-10-13

Having taken intro to philosophy my freshman year of college, I must point out that you've committed a slippery slope fallacy. You assume that this lawsuit will mean everyone will be successfully sued for pissing off people with their words, when there's far more nuance to the case. It's also a false equivalence fallacy. You've drawn a connection to these two scenarios with faulty reasoning.

ashtar. - 2022-10-13

Defamation is hard to prove in US law. His actions were particularly egregious and his legal team was comically incompetent. I don't think this is going to be much of a precedent.

I do have concerns about the "we need to stop misinformation" people lending moral cover to platform monopolies (private, unaccountable, actively evil) to decide what information people get access to, but the legal side seems pretty much how it's always been.

Cena_mark - 2022-10-13

It's also concerning that the platform monopolies give these wack jobs a megaphone.

ashtar. - 2022-10-14

it’s concerning that private companies decide whose speech people hear

Crackersmack - 2022-10-14

yeah from what I understand, what happened here is that he really really pissed off two different judges with all kinds of ridiculous shenanigans and they decided to nuke him basically

Cena_mark - 2022-10-14

I have no problem with Jones being deplatformed and censored. Over 25 years of broadcasting and nothing of value said. Fuck that turd and the sanctimonious free speech absolutists. Speech is free, defamation can be quite costly

Cena_mark - 2022-10-14

The market place of ideas needs bouncers.

Crackersmack - 2022-10-14

they have to find somebody that is despicable in order to get everybody to agree that there should be steep financial penalties for certain kinds of speech, then later these tactics will be employed more liberally

SolRo - 2022-10-14

The first amendment was written at a time when widely spreading dangerous disinformation took immense amounts of effort, time and money.

It really shouldn’t work the same way today.

Crackersmack - 2022-10-15

yes Sol I agree that we should go back to the time where the only way to widely disseminate a political opinion was if you owned a printing press or worked for someone that did, sounds like a great idea

SolRo - 2022-10-15

There are many countries with much healthier democracies than America that still have some limitations on speech and press.

Nominal - 2022-10-13

Ha ha, we seriously had an Alex Jone tin hat drone who downvoted this?

Nominal - 2022-10-15

We do!

Which long time returning turd is Amos?

TheInternetisFullofGenitals - 2022-10-17

Good. Alex Jones deserves to die in poverty and so do the people who enabled him.

SolRo - 2022-10-17

My ideal scenario is that a completely broken and delusional jones keeps pumping his supporters for money and that money is instantly confiscated and given to his victims. That way jones and his supporters end up in poverty.
