Sad day.

It is the circle of life. She had lived it well. It is all any of us can do.

Lef - 2022-08-01

A trail blazer, and didn't even know it until Dr. King told her. Truly well lived.

Anaxagoras - 2022-08-02

Definitely, SolRo. She died at the ripe age of 89, and lived a helluva life. Couldn't ask for more.

Still sucks when such people pass, though.

This is weirdly racist.

I was thinking about this scene earlier today, after I spotted the news. It's very early in the first season, and maybe Uhura's debut episode, and I think it indicates that maybe there was a moment early on, before Star Trek found its identity as a bastion of socialist utopia by other names. It's not only incredibly weird and offensive to compare an extraterrestrial to the Devil, but it's also weird that Uhura's blackness seems to be what gives her license to behave like this. It's a serious contender for the cringiest moment of sixties tv, but it may have also been Nichelle Nichols' breakthrough moment, and her charisma is undeniable.

Just finished watching "The Apple" (season 2) and Kirk rips into Spock at the end of the episode, comparing his appearance to the devil. They kept it up for all 3 seasons.

Nichelle was a trained singer, and she sang (and danced) a few times. I think it had more to do with the directors acknowledging her overall skill as an entertainer, and maybe having her beauty take centre stage (ratings after all), instead of the color of her skin.

I do agree that early TOS had an ill defined Spock, especially obvious with The Cage.

It's also a dupe. I submitted it myself not long ago, but I'm glad it got posted again. I wanted to talk about it today.

what tags did you use? This version has terrible artifacts.

William Shatner posted a surprisingly classy & moving tweet about Nichols:

"I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Nichelle. She was a beautiful woman & played an admirable character that did so much for redefining social issues both here in the US & throughout the world. I will certainly miss her. Sending my love and condolences to her family. Bill"

And then I read Takei's tweet, and he reminded me all over again why I'm gay for Takei. His tweet literally brought a tear to my eye.

"I shall have more to say about the trailblazing, incomparable Nichelle Nichols, who shared the bridge with us as Lt. Uhura of the USS Enterprise, and who passed today at age 89. For today, my heart is heavy, my eyes shining like the stars you now rest among, my dearest friend."
