I think that yer man was doing some DIY around the house, dealing with some old PVC pipes or the like, that were crumbling, said to himself "Oh dear, my house has such crumbly pipes" or something, and upon uttering that phrase "crumbly pipes" this entire fictional tv show came fully formed unbidden to his mind.
