This guy has shown no emotion throughout this entire saga. No emotion when he was killing Floyd and no emotion through the trial. Is he just a stone cold psycho?

decoy - 2021-04-21

It's been apparent and noted upon by many experts including FBI analysts that Chauvin is an obvious clinical sociopath. If his defense was worth a spit, that should've been their case. The Minneapolis PD was grossly negligent in hiring him to begin with as he was observably unfit to serve.

Anaxagoras - 2021-04-21

Pre-emptive disclaimer: I'm not a clinical psychologist, and have no special qualifications in psychology.

Having said that, I'm not sure how the experts can distinguish a clinical psychopath from your run-of-the-mill raging racist asshole. I mean, if you start with the worldview that blacks are worthless untermensch whose mere existence offends you, then why *would* you show emotion when killing one of them? Ditto for the subsequent trial.

jfcaron_ca - 2021-04-21

I would probably look emotionally drained if I realized *I* was the baddie too.

Hazelnut - 2021-04-21

I wonder if it ever will sink in. I hope it does. But ultimately I don't care if Chauvin is penitent or not, as long as he's in a penitentiary

exy - 2021-04-21

I find it extremely unlikely that Chauvin has decided he's the baddy.

Hazelnut - 2021-04-22

I find myself thinking for the thousandth time this year THANK FUCKING CHRIST TRUMP ISN’T PRESIDENT. If he were, we’d be looking at a pardon.

simon666 - 2021-04-22

Hazelnut, I think this was a state crime so a Presidential Pardon wouldn't work here. Only a pardon at level of Governor would do it. But I take your broader point about Trump not being in office.

Hazelnut - 2021-04-22

Ohhh, you’re right, I didn’t think of that

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2021-04-22

Im not sure that wouldn't stop him. Trump would always find a way to make everything about him, and then he would find a way to make it worse.

Anaxagoras - 2021-04-21

Correction for the description:

"1:33 for the good part"

(There isn't a 58:33 timestamp)

As for the video itself: God damn this was satisfying. This douchebag so thoroughly deserved a "Guilty" verdict... even more than the other recent police douchebags we've seen. Bugger him sideways with an 11 foot barge pole.

Binro the Heretic - 2021-04-21

Less than half an hour before this verdict was announced, an Ohio police officer shot and killed a 15-year-old Black girl named Ma’Khia Bryant.

Bryant had called police saying she was being attacked. When the officer got there, they found Bryant holding a knife. There were several other people there. Bryant shoved another girl to the ground and ran back towards the house. She swung the knife at another girl.

The officer shot Bryant 4 times in the chest.

ashtar. - 2021-04-21

That is tragic, especially given the age of the victim, but preventing someone from getting stabbed doesn't seem like the worst reason to shoot someone.

Binro the Heretic - 2021-04-21

Why do cops have tasers, again?

love - 2021-04-21

for people in wheelchairs, duuuuh.
https://www.google.com/search?q=wheelchair+bound+man+tasered&o q=wheelchair+bound+man+tasered

jfcaron_ca - 2021-04-21

It's surprisingly hard to kill someone with a knife if you aren't trained in it. It's easy to cut people I guess. What I'm saying is a cut cop is better than a dead child.

Tasers aren't much better because the cops can't seem to remember which side of their belt has the gun designed for killing.

There is some technofuture where cop guns are locked in their cars and are only remotely unlocked after some higher-level authorization, when the cops request it. Such a request would automatically activate all cameras available, with permanent storage of the footage, an internal investigation to determine if it was justified, and a public record of the request and result of the investigation. With such bullshit bureaucracy to deal with, cops might try to resolve situations by like, tackling a teenager instead of shooting her.

SolRo - 2021-04-21

One of the families of the “I meant to use the taser” victims needs to sue taser international for making their weapons shaped exactly like guns.

Hazelnut - 2021-04-21

Or we could, you know, have consequences for police murder. This verdict was a step.

ashtar. - 2021-04-21

She was actively trying to stab another young woman, not the cop.

SolRo - 2021-04-21

A redesigned taser that is held and operated in no way like a gun would remove most reasonable doubt if any cop kills a person while claiming they thought they were using a taser.

It might also keep people from getting shot accidentally, which is a good thing? You can agree to at least that? People getting shot bad?

Hazelnut - 2021-04-21

Yes, people getting shot bad, so don’t make excuses. No one is actually confusing tasers with guns. Notice how no cop ever accidentally tased someone when they meant to shoot them. There is already no reasonable doubt there. The solution is a legal system where cops can’t get away with excusing hate crimes with invented nonsense — which, granted, I know you’re fond of.

SolRo - 2021-04-21

So you’re saying no cop ever in history accidentally mixed up two gun shaped items, and that every supposedly accidental taser mixup shooting was in fact an execution? Zero doubt in your mind about that?

TeenerTot - 2021-04-21

The cool part was when cops shouted "blue lives matter" to people gathered nearby.

Hazelnut - 2021-04-22

SolRo giving a great impression of Chauvin’s attorneys

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2021-04-22

To be fair, Hazelnut, if a police tazed someone instead of shooting them, would we necessarily know about it? Would it make the news?

I tend to believe the officer made a mistake, probably because she's a woman, and she has a nice face. Or, to put it another way, I have no fucking idea what happened... but, when we talk about consequences, it shouldn't always come down to punishing the individual officer. When sending in a good guy with a gun is society's go-to move, mistakes will be made.

Now, Derek Chauvin didn't make a mistake. He murdered a guy, because he thought he could. When you've got your knee on someone's neck for nine minutes, that's at least eight minutes of premeditation.

When someone is killed, the priority isn't punishing the officer. The first priority is always to figure how to not kill anyone else. I fully accept that sometimes the officer is not a murderer, but either way, this can't be the end of it. If the officer IS a murderer, that doesn't get the rest of us off the hook. We sent a murderer in there. And if the officer AND the victim are both innocent, which I'm sure sometimes happens, we can't just leave things there. When someone is killed who is not a mortal threat, there should ALWAYS be consequences, but it shouldn't ALWAYS be the officer who holds the bag.

We really need to ask: does the tazer look like a gun? Is there a reason for that? Aren't there tazers that DON'T look like guns? And maybe we should switch to those in the future?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2021-04-22

It seems like the Ohio officer wasn't defending anyone's life. He was defending the idea of authority. I mean, if civilians are permitted to cut each other, that's JUST ANARCHY, RIGHT?

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2021-04-21

Read about some police with *balls*

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2021-04-21

Dont need no gun when u have balls of steel.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2021-04-21

They didnt even have their handcuffs or pepper spray (they were on break) yet they tackled a guy with a machine gun and a grenade. Several shots were fired and the pin pulled from the grenade. They successfully arrested the guy, no-one was seriously hurt.

SolRo - 2021-04-21

British police are specifically trained to handle people armed with knives, without having to shoot them.
