When I lived in Alabama, people fishing in the river would occasionally pull up a paddlefish. They almost always had them converted into a trophy.

You could pull up frighteningly big catfish from the depths of the Alabama river. I once saw live & in person a catfish that was 42" (a full meter) in length. The guy who caught it had it in the bed of his truck and showed it to everyone at the boat ramp before he left.

The biggest live paddlefish I saw was only about 6" (15cm) and was returned to the water. The local hardware store sported some trophies behind the counter and they had a 19" (48cm) paddlefish.

The Claiborne Lock & Dam was a source of the old urban legend about a diver going down to do some repair work and rushing back up so fast he got the bends because he claimed to have seen a catfish big enough to swallow a man whole.
