A bit disingenuous to say it’s exactly the same thing as there were some protesters that split off from the peaceful march and went to vandalize the police department.

Crackersmack - 2020-05-28

SolRo here making sure to distinguish the peaceful protesters from the people that apparently deserve to be tear-gassed. Make sure to display your grief and frustration in liberal-approved ways only. We want to maintain bourgeois respectability at any cost.

SolRo - 2020-05-28

I’m not sure what fantasy you live in where you expect to surround a police station, throw rocks at cops not expect a response.

Also stop being a fucking idiot and forcing me to defend cops.

The situation so far is a good middle ground. Protesters got to mess up some shit and cops defended themselves using minimal force.

SolRo - 2020-05-28

Disregard that last part, updates from overnight indicate it’s turning into a clusterfuck.

Spike Jonez - 2020-05-28

Can't wait for you to get tear gassed.

Binro the Heretic - 2020-05-28

Did they fire the selective tear gas that only hurts the bad guys?

Hazelnut - 2020-05-29

I'm happy to see Twitter has tagged Trump's post for glorifying violence. Can we get something similar for SolRo?

SolRo - 2020-05-29

Here comes the Tucker Carlson fanboy...

Hazelnut - 2020-05-29

How cute. Meanwhile your police friends have gone on to arrest a black CNN reporter and crew. The nearby white reporter was left alone.

SolRo - 2020-05-29

Yeah tucker, I said the cops are my friends. Good job catching that, tucker.

Hazelnut - 2020-05-29

Jesus Christ. I had thought you were deep down a basically decent person who just had a few ugly sides. The reality is much worse.

Have fun being you.

SolRo - 2020-05-29

Calm down tucker.

Hazelnut - 2020-05-29

Preeeetty obvious who’s the Fox News mouthpiece here, you slimy mothertucker.

SolRo - 2020-05-29

No need to get testy, tucker.

Hazelnut - 2020-05-29

A man was murdered by police and you think you’re cute and funny.

SolRo - 2020-05-29

Glass houses, tucker.

Hazelnut - 2020-05-29

?

SolRo - 2020-05-29

"I'm happy to see Twitter has tagged Trump's post for glorifying violence. Can we get something similar for SolRo?"

"A man was murdered by police and you think you’re cute and funny."

You're a bit a dim bulb, tucker.

Hazelnut - 2020-05-29

There is absolutely no contradiction there. Both you and Trump think you’re oh-so-cute supporting police brutality. Both of you can fuck off to the rock you crawled under.

SolRo - 2020-05-29

Keep living in your alt-reality tucker

Hazelnut - 2020-05-29

It’s not alt-reality. A man was murdered by the police. You’re on written record ON THIS VERY PAGE cheerleading the police for teargassing the protestors against that murder. And that’s that.

SolRo - 2020-05-29

Okay tucker

Hazelnut - 2020-05-29

Listen to yourself

SolRo - 2020-05-30

Right back at ya, tucky

themilkshark - 2020-05-30

So yeah innocent person murdered because of race, and SolRo is name calling, not saying anything of worth. How do you even remember your own password with that empty skull?

SolRo - 2020-05-30

Sorry just I can’t take our resident tucker seriously since he just lies constantly about everything to make his “point” and follows me around to every conversation because he’s obsessed with me.

He’s like the new evilhomer but dumber

Hazelnut - 2020-05-30

A man was murdered by the police and you’re cheerleading the cops on this very page — if anyone thinks I’m making it up just look at the thread below.

That’s not ‘lying’ that’s your own words right there. Or did I hack your account?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-05-30

(sigh) I have to take SolRo's side this time.

>>>A bit disingenuous to say it’s exactly the same thing

is true, and saying so is not cheerleading for the cops, or whatever else people are saying. There are limits to the analogy.

The big difference is that the cops are the obbject of the protest, and so, naturally, they're scared.

And these are different cops. State Troopers defending state capitols are probably better trained.

And these are big crowds.

Here's my position. Most cops are decent public servants, and some of them are over their head here. But they are over their head because a bad cop put his full weight on some guy's neck That's the origin of this whole thing.

There's a system in place that tries to protect cops, and winds up protecting bad cops, and that winds up putting good cops in greater peril, and even punishing cops who come forward. The cop who killed the young man needs to be charged. Maybe he'll be acquitted, but he must be charged.

Cops have fucking military equipment now, they should have access to some kind of technology that makes restraining someone less likely to result in death. Come on, it's got to be possible.

Hazelnut - 2020-05-30

JHM, one reason I respect you so much is I always enjoy the way we two can disagree respectfully. Thank you for posting that thoughtful and nuanced perspective. There’s a lot of wisdom there. Now I’m going to disagree with it.

I have nothing against police in general - it’s tough underpaid underappreciated labor. But these cops... it’s not a case of one bad apple. They’re gassing protesters, arresting journalists, even shooting journalists. And then when Trump et all act like the protestors are the real villains here, that’s an old old script.

Here, this article explains it better than I can: https://www.newstatesman.com/world/2020/05/minneapolis-protests-ge orge-floyd-killing-black-white-america-race-riots

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-05-30

I agree with just about everything in the article, and Jesus Christ, they're shooting journalists? But I also agree with everything I wrote.

I'm not going to excuse the actions of every policeman... or the actions every protestor, either. But as groups, the police and the protestors are both caught up in a broken system.

The article is about how the system stays broken.

The first line is:

"The killing of George Floyd has, like other killings of black Americans, been quickly repurposed as a story about the violence of the ensuing protests. "

Maybe we're all taking our eye off the ball.

Hazelnut - 2020-05-30

That’s the other reason it’s a pleasure to disagree with reasonable people—so often I find we’re actually mostly in agreement, just looking at something big from different angles.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-05-30

Also, I think it's ridiculous to call Hazlenet "Tucker".

Crackersmack - 2020-05-28

Of course they expect a response. They also get a similar "response" from cops when they are peaceful, not resisting arrest, and not even protesting. That's kinda the point of this whole thing.

Whats important is that we respect your civility norms, correct? Lets rend our clothes and scream at the sky together in memory of those broken windows.

SolRo - 2020-05-28

Please do share with the class your evidence of the police teargassing the peaceful march that happened earlier in the day, you hyperbolic imbecile.

Crackersmack - 2020-05-28

Hey buddy I'm just glad you're here to make sure the perspective of the cops is represented.

SolRo - 2020-05-28

Don't deflect little trumpie.

You implied cops gassed peaceful the protestors. Show the evidence.

Crackersmack - 2020-05-28

The protesters are justified in their un-peacefulness.

Tear gas is banned by the Geneva Convention for use in war. It's literally a war crime. There is no justification for using tear gas on civilians, no matter what their behavior. The police should have retreated instead of escalating the force being used.

SolRo - 2020-05-28

So the cops didn’t teargas the peaceful protest?

Crackersmack - 2020-05-28

Can you deepthroat that police boot all the way to the laces?

SolRo - 2020-05-28

Fight the power, internet armchair soldier!

Cena_mark - 2020-05-28

The cops try to arrest peaceful protesters and then tear gas them when they rightfully resist. The police dont attempt to arrest or even order the anti-lockdown protestors at all. They allow them free reign of the state house.

SolRo - 2020-05-28

FFS.

This wasn’t the protest.

This was a much smaller group that -went to- the police station after the main protest ended and people starting throwing rocks and vandalizing. Look at the news footage in the related clips.

As shitty as it is that white nationalists can walk around with assault rifles trying to intimidate people is, they did that in a state where it’s legal to do so, and cops can’t legally arrest someone just for being an asshole.

And I’m not even disagreeing that some civil unrest was warranted. But looting and arson of the local community isn’t a great image for the cause.

Crackersmack - 2020-05-28

"First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season."

Shallow understanding from people of goodwill is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."

simon666 - 2020-05-28

Quick aside: I thought it was a positive development that Mayor Frey said explicitly that he could not justify for any reason why George Loyd should have been killed, that if "your or I" had done that to Loyd that we'd be behind bars, and called for the city attorney to file charges against the arresting officer.

On the point of following norms: On the one hand (the rhetorical hand), you probably bring more people to your cause by following norms and protesting peacefully, dressed in your Sunday best; one the other hand, it is intolerable that the police are rough riding and killing anyone, especially our black brothers and sisters, so if the normal channels of don't put pressure on the institution to change, then "unrest" might be what's needed to bring about change.

simon666 - 2020-05-28

One more point: The literal crooked badge on that white cop says it all.

SolRo - 2020-05-28

I should have mentioned that earlier, but this case is being handled quite quickly and so-far fairly. Cops handling the arrest all got fired quickly and some are likely to be charged. There are all sorts of investigations starting.

Remember a couple years ago a cop could shoot an unarmed man in the back and all the authorities would close ranks?

Hazelnut - 2020-05-28

Fucking hell.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-05-30

Just found out the officer was arrested and charged with murder. GOOD! Facing 12 years in prison.

I also just found out that George Floyd was being detained on suspiscion of passing a counterfeit bill. And he wasn't resisting arrest.
