Here is part 1

Fuck. I was in kindergarten when this aired. It started out unsettling enough with the weird town and Shipwreck freaking out. Then everyone going crazy and melting into ooze. Shipwreck going even crazier with children's cartoon TORTURE SCENE and screaming ghost heads. End with his fake family melting in a burning house.

Jesus. Despite being animated toy ads, there were moments of genius, disturbing, and disturbing genius. Pretty much every Shipwreck episode, plus the classic where the Drednoks form a rock band.

That's why this show is remembered so fondly, sure it was made to sell toys, but there was a lot of heart put into it

The floating ghost heads created by an impossible torture machine is top shelf material.

Not to mention the constant bickering of the main 2 villains being the consistently best part of them. GI Joe put the Starscream character in charge and Megatron as the #2 constantly calling him an idiot. Shit, I think half the GI Joe plots revolved around Destro and others getting fed up with Cobra Commander's incompetence and trying to undermine him.

It's also why post-movie Transformers was dull. No Starscream equivalent.

Shipwreck's fake family getting melted was some fairly heavy stuff for a kid's cartoon.

This and the alternate dimension episode, where DC is filled with Cobra monuments, were some of the most memorable episodes, for sure. And the one where some Russian soldier says, "Less talk, more walk"--that might've been the same one where Baroness' farewell cry (as she got kicked off a train car I think) cemented "oblivion" in my vocabulary.

Also I hadn't realized until this rewatching that Shipwreck's actor is just doing a Nicholson impression.

Certainly the GI Joe movie's top crime was not the fact that it showed ICE SINKING, nor that nobody ever wore helmets, nor that Duke was like 18, but that it had no Shipwreck whatsoever. Not even as a wastoid too drunk to crawl out of his hammock the entire time.

No "Learning is half the battle" segment at the end? Guess there was too much gaddam plot for that shit here. Fifth star is relieved for our drunken sailor's presence.

They have a 24/7 stream. Includes opening, closing credits, and PSA segments.

I always suspected that Tomax and Xamot were there to make the animator's lives' even easier.

not ordinarily much of an anime fan but this is good

Despite being pure 80s Reagan jingoism, GI Joe was actually way ahead of the curve on protesting America's lack of universal healthcare. In "The Traitor", Dusty sells secrets to Cobra when he can't afford his mother's medical bills. And in that same episode, there's this quip from (best character) Shipwreck.

^Duke quickly admonishes Shipwreck's socialist bellyaching.

badideasinaction - 2020-05-22

I always wondered if GI Joe was written as Reagan incarnate or a weird Poe’s law version of it. Some seemed a bit too over the top, combined with the effective corporatization of later Cobra operations.

I've watched a bunch of the old streaming episodes now. Tamox and Xamot interchangeably switch between "private profiteering CEOs" and generic Cobra lackeys. There doesn't seem to be any story point where they changed.
