Someone should let Contrapoints know. Maybe you could tweet her... wait, never mind.

I just spent a long time tapping out a response with my thumbs, and somehow it didn't post. (Was it me? Can't rule it out)

So here's the short version: more criticism, less condemnation. People should be called out on their mistakes, not punished without end.

There is racism, which is a great evil.

There is being a racist, which is a bad thing, but is quite common, and may not be a.person's most defining trait.

And there is saying something racist, which is something that, I, in my 61 years, have done, at least 3 or 4 times that I can recall. I'm not proud of that, but I don't think it should define me, and I think good people are capable of saying things that are racist. But if you heard me, you would be right to criticize me.

When white people complain about "being branded a racist" it sounds like whiny self-pitying bullshit... and maybe it is, but if you want to be heard, maybe sometimes its more effective to criticise someone's words than to judge the person. Instead of telling someone the comments section that you've never met that they're racist, tell them that's a racist thing to say.

This was not the short version, after all.

I think public personalities should have different standards.

While I’ll agree a minor transgression decades ago with no related pattern of repetition should not brand someone a pariah, doing bigoted comedy bits, to earn money, in this day and age doesn’t deserve any kind of forgiveness or understanding.

Because in that case there are really only two options; either the comedian is a bigot and honestly makes bigot jokes, or they are not a bigot but cynically make bigot jokes because there is a small but very supportive audience for that. And if for some reason a major company decides to pay them Lots More Money to work for them, we are in no way required to instantly forgive and forget that person just so they can make Lots More Money.

It bugs me a little when people talk about money like it is merely an evil corrupting influence and not a necessary prerequisite for survival, so lets talk about professionalism.

I have to go to bed right now, so let me just say that for most sins, forgiveness ought to be a function of repentence. And forgiveness does not always mean a release from consequence. I think a repentant murderer should be forgiven... but not pardoned, if you know what I mean.

But as the video describes, none of the “canceled” people are now broke and out on the street because the evil left keeps them from making -any- money.

I bet the racist SNL guy will actually make more money now after the right wing fully embraces him. He will collect all kinds of speakers fees to whine to rooms full of white bigots about how not bigoted they are and how the evil left is destroying free speech/comedy.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-09-27

Yeah, and that's much more the problem, in my view: people being embraced by right-wing morons, for moronic reasons.

When I talk about the need to criticize more and condemn less, by the way, that doesn't just apply to the left. Bill Burr, who I kind of like, by the way, made a statement about millenials in the wake of this SNL controversy that I thought was way over the top in terms of anger.

Members of the degenerate and immoral wealth class should be happy that at worst they're getting #cancelled twitter instead of getting their rotten heads chopped off with a guillotine like they deserve.
