I went back to college several years ago to become a computer programmer, and it worked out well for me, but (at the risk of sounding elitist) the idea that all of these blue collar workers who lose their jobs to automation are going to become programmers is laughable. A few very smart and talented ones will. But there is already a glut of people with IT & CS degrees because they were told "that's where the money is" who are looking for jobs and either can't find one or are being hired into jobs they simply can't do out of wishful thinking and desperation. Maybe anybody can learn to write a For Loop, but I think you have to have a certain kind of mind to be a real software engineer, and there are already too many people in IT & CS jobs who (out of either a lack of interest or ability) can't really do the hard stuff.

Meanwhile we can't get a tree service or electrician to come to our house because the few local ones are booked solid for months, and they can basically charge whatever they feel like because there's no competition.

I became a programmer because I was working in a machine shop running a cnc machine with catastrophically bad software supported by one guy, the author.
So I put myself through a trade school to fix that P.O.S. system, and immediately quit on graduation, because holy shit, working for media bloodsuckers paid stupid better money compared to you know, actually making useful things.

And what is your job?

I’m a mechanic.

So I can pretend like I’m a betterer most-realist hard working Murcan.
