I spent time in the psych ward about 8 years ago, and they gave me a corned beef Reuben with stewed apples on it.

I’ll tell you what, I have never savored a sandwich with such gusto, and it was the best tasting thing I have ever eaten. I understand the feeling.

I have friends in nursing. All of them have at least one story about terminal patients who hold out just long enough to say one last goodbye or do one last thing before expiring.

The one that really got to me was the story of an elderly lady who got one last assisted shower and a fresh nightgown. After she was helped back in bed, she smiled and said, "That's good. I can go now." then just laid her head back and stopped breathing.
