RIP The Dumb One.

They look cool in black & white.

If they were speaking French or Swedish this would be in the Criterion collection.

Most subversive band of their generation.

"HEAD", their 1968 movie, is in the Criterion Collection, and deservedly so.

"The Prefab Four" were actually pretty good, and why wouldn't they be? The Monkees were put together for the TV show through a huge, comprehensive talent search. That meant they were a manufactured entity, but it also meant they were talented. Okay, they didn't play the instruments on their first album, but that's because the tracks had already been recorded when they signed on. It wasn't because they couldn't play their instruments. They actually recorded a pretty good live album.

Micky Dolenz was just on Gilbert’s show talking about the Monkees and actually got a bit weepy about Head which in his mind is the one movie that captured the time.

I actually streamed HEAD on Streamdumpster last night. The structureless first hour is energetic and inventive, landing somewhere between Monty Python and Luis Bunuel. It's only in the last 10-15 minutes, when the filmmakers try to steer the proceedings toward some kind of ending, that the whole thing starts to deflate. Overall, it's much better than most non-Beatles rock band movies.

I remember browsing LPs at shop located in an "antiques" mall and as I was looking over a copy of the Monkees' first album in a well-worn sleeve some neckbeard stepped up to me and the friends accompanying me and felt the need to inform us that, did we realize that the Monkees were a totally manufactured pop phenomenon? in a tone of voice that suggested he had already decided we didn't. I sarcastically told him, no, I certainly didn't know that and he didn't seem to catch on.

The way Malcolm McLaren assembled the Sex Pistols has been compared to the way the Monkees were put together. In fact, when Glen Matlock left the Pistols (to be replaced, for good or ill, by Sid Vicious ) he said that the group was so controlled by McLaren that he felt like he was in the Monkees.

The Who were a constructed boy band. Tom Jones almost fronted the Rolling Stones. The Police were an Uncle's cynical gift to his nephew.

Legitimacy in the music industry is a meaningless grift.
