this awful game

I really dig the atmosphere and audio/visual design of these games, especially DS3, but they kinda lose their flavor for me after a certain point. The whole "LOL IT'S LUDICROUSLY HARD GIT GUD" bullshit really ruins it, and kinda gives this gross, ableist stink to the whole series since the ability to customize the difficulty would make it more accessible to people of different physical/mental skill sets like tons of other games on the market.

'ableist'
you fucking cartoon

StanleyPain - 2018-05-17

Maybe. But I'm right, as always. And that's what counts.

If you make them easy then coop is cosmetic and not a core part of the game, which it is. The games are far from impossible, just ask for help.

I have played the sequels, but Dark Souls 1 isn’t really hard, its unforgiving. It requires you to learn its own unique rythem and pay absolute attention to what you are seeing. Now, that of course means that the slightest distraction (i.e. real life) pretty much ruins any chance of success.

If you go into it with the right mindset and an engironment that will allow you to pay absolute attention to it for hours on end, you will be successful. For the rest of us plebs, there will always be Diablo.

I've only played DS3 and Bloodborne, but their difficulty is vastly overstated. They're incredibly challenging but usually fair, and worst'case scenario you can always call for help.

im way too into these games. the difficulty curve is very real, but it's actually part of the narrative, rather than for its own sake. don't give up!

Dark souls reminded me of so many brutally unhelpful, but fair, and logically consistent PC arpgs.. which is a big compliment..

But its let down by its decidedly consoley boss fights. Which dont make sense (just physically) and break all the conventions the game previously set up rather well.

So, imo, overall its ... 'meeeeh, ok'

Chicken the Did - 2018-05-17

They can be broken down to this:

"SIMON SAYS, ROLL LEFT!"
"SIMON SAYS, RAISE SHIELD!"
"ROLL RIGHT!"
"OOPS, I DIDN'T SAY 'SIMON SAYS'!'"

What the fuck is a "console-y boss fight"?

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2018-05-19

Generally any 'boss' fight. The whole concept screams arcade and/or console.
Especially one where the 'boss' is not just a particularly tough regular enemy, and has its own unique, and often counter intuitive, mechanics.

Classic pc games tend to be western and more open and simulation-like eg. Rogue. Console games tend to be more japanese and arcadey.

The original purpose of bosses seems to be to show off how big a sprite your system can render, and also eat kids quarters.
From a gameplay perspective they often suck. Dark souls is perfect example.
The combat mechanics they establish for most of the game are really good. They're fair, they *make sense* and are understandable. You can employ tactics and skill to fight well. You can reason about these encounters rationally and come up with effective tactics.
And then there are the bosses. Which are completely nonsensical automatons. The mechanics used to beat them do not build on the mechanics you have been dealing with for the rest of the game. Instead they are seperate, very crude and counter-intuitive ones. You cannot reason about them, you must simply memorize attack patterns and telegraphs, then abuse invincibility frames and bizarrely stay really close to the boss. Like, if the giant boss was portrayed realistically, and not just as a stupid automaton, he could just step on you or nudge you and instantly kill you if you were to stay that close to him. It simply doesnt make any sense.
They also encourage you to play the same boss several times, die a few times, memorize the patterns and then use this immersion breaking meta-knowlegde to beat him. So they are turning a game of skill and tactics into one of boring grinding and rote memorization'.

Lets compare that to a great pc game, 'Deus Ex' there really is no boss at all in the game.. There is a villain of sorts. But you can choose to help him, or even kill him remotely by hacking a computer and turning off his life support.

I really want to like these games but they have got to pull their head out of their own ass with the intentionally, ridiculously opaque mechanics. The PVP and co-op are brilliant when they work, but they insist on hiding it all behind obscure hidden areas, hidden mechanics, consumable items, and questionable balance choices (half health for Bloodborne invasions? Equipment levels not taken into account?).

Oh, and you have to pay extra to subscribe to Sony Network plus if you want any of that online multiplayer content.

Which is both shitty and smart business considering that Bloodborne is the only reason to own a PS4.
