Not surprised at all, actually, stuff like this has been done for a lot of decades. Whether it was ever effective is a whole other matter, but people thought it was and could make money on it so they did it.

Seriously? I sat through it first time with my eyes closed to see if I could recognize anything like actual words. Nope. Then opened my eyes and saw the words they wanted me to hear, and just laughed.

If you go looking hard enough for something, you will find it, whether it's really there or now.

Who would have thought that a commercial for McDonald's is also secretly a commercial for McDonald's.

Just want to mention to anyone still confused that this is, in fact, not real.

When the expectation is planted, your brain will find a way to hear these patterns. Without the subtitles, you won't hear it because there isn't anything there to hear except some backwards stuff.

Wilson Brian Key made a carreer out of pretending that subliminal advertising is real. He went to his grave believing it, but that doesn't make it so.

fedex - 2018-03-12

that's what I said

betabox - 2018-03-12

Indeed, it is. But I was just pointing out that a WBK turned his bizarre fantasies into a very big sensation in the 70s, obsessively finding "subliminal" things in advertising which patently were not there. The funniest example was that he found a surprising number of sexual images in an advertisement for one of his own books. When he pointed this out to the photo editor, they said that they just threw some ice in a glass, added whiskey, and photographed it.

He didn't believe them. He saw penises and breasts everywhere, and dammit it was someone else's fault!

COUNTERPOINT: advertising firms made good money back in the 50s and 60s convincing people it was real and worked, and it became a self fulfilling prophecy. Which again is not to say it works (it doesn't) but it has been done, mainly in print ads.

It was also done a fair amount in the late 90s as a kind of in-joke, like those Coke machines around 2000 or 2001 that were printed all over with a sort of "Coke can covered in drops of water" motif but had almost invisible little polar bear faces worked in to the halftone pattern on the reflections inside the drops.

This video is fake, though, on second listen.

You can make anything said in reverse say just about anything at all! Play at home.
