He was a professional cartoonist for 80 of his 94 years.

A more innocent, pre-Ms. Buxley world.

I swear I inherited memories of this show through RNA transfer rather than formed memories of my own.

I watched this when I was about six. I don't remember the name of the show, but the other King Feature Syndicate cartoons were Snuffy Smith and Krazy Kat. They all had great theme songs.

Don't forget Barney Google!

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-05

Barney Google was actually a character in Sniffy Smith.

Incidentally, KrazyKat might be worth a Google. I'm going to search right now. I'm talking about the strip. An old girlfriend had a coffee table book of reprints from the 30s, and it blew my mind. Not just for the homoerotic sadomasichism, either!

Yep. That's what I said.

I will never forget my hate for Beetle Bailey because on one particular birthday, my family had no money but someone gave my parents a book of comics. I got excited that it would be superheroes. But no. It was Beetle Bailey. The only thing I got for my birthday. It's not possible for me to hate a comic more than I hate this one. I had no idea it had ever been adapted to television and it is every bit as horrible as I imagined it would be. The voices are even MORE irritating than I expected. God.

Why does Beetle Baily sound exactly like I imagined Broom-Hilda would sound.

Xenocide - 2018-02-05

When I was a kid, my uncle had a collection of old Mad Magazines from the 70's, which I would look through when I visited his otherwise boring home.

One of them had a parody of Beetle Bailey in which the other soldiers realize they've never seen Beetle's eyes, and wonder what he could be hiding. They become obsessed with trying to remove his hat so they can see his whole face. After various mishaps they succeed, and it turns out his eyes are normal, but on his forehead he has a tattoo that reads, "GET OUT OF VIETNAM."

It would be better if it was just a deformed cyclops eye, but I guess that will do.

There is apparently an X-rated file in Mort Walker's office, waiting to be published. I'm not sure if we'll see it for a few years yet. He regularly submitted blue cartoons to his editor and they were always returned, and he just kept them in a file and a few have leaked out occasionally.
