Am I the only one who thought Army of Darkness was a letdown after Evil Dead 2 and Darkman?

StanleyPain - 2018-01-08

I thought it was a let down as an Evil Dead movie, but that it was pretty great as it's own thing (a kind of tribute to Harryhausen-esque fantasy movies).

tesla_weapon - 2018-01-08

Don't worry, Juice tells me this often. Personally I really like Army of Darkness, but then it was the first evil dead i ever watched, and after that, evil dead 2 just seemed kinda lame and repetitive.

Not as good as Evil Dead 2, but it's still fun on its own. I'm glad it got a TRPG adaptation.

Old_Zircon - 2018-01-08

Don't get me wrong it was definitely a really fun movie, it just felt oddly restrained to me, which is weird considering the content. Probably just a side effect of the type of big setpieces it used but to me it lacked the sort of frenetic energy of the original Evil Dead, the humor of the second Evil Dead and the full-on excss of Darkman, and was the first Sam Raimi movie that felt, for lack for a better word, "safe."

But then I'm a schlock snob so don't take anything I say too seriously.

Old_Zircon - 2018-01-08

It was like you thought you were going to see Frank Zappa play but when you got there it was Phish.

Except that Army of Darkness isn't awful.

tesla_weapon - 2018-01-08

Yeah, like I said, I watched Army of Darkness first, when I was about 14, and had no idea about Evil Dead 1 and 2 until years later. When you're 14, it's hilarious, but when you're older you respect the first two more. I dunno though, maybe it's my mental fragility, but I like safe, and I like funny. A lot of that shit is way too close to the bone for me to enjoy.

I had the same experience as Tesla Weapon and Army of Darkness was my introduction to the series. It wasn't until I got on this new thing called the INTERNET in 94/95 did I realize that the movie was tied to those Evil Dead cassettes I kept passing by in the horror section of a video rental store.

Also unlike previous making of documentaries about the movie this one really goes in depth regarding all the challenges / re-shoots / re-cuts the movie went through just to get released. After all that it's amazing what came out the other end was still the energetic and entertaining movie that gripped me at a time when studio driven cinema was starting i's decline into safe/boring/cgi laden bullshit.

Anaxagoras - 2018-01-08

Like a couple others, this was also my introduction to the series, and when I watched Evil Dead 2, ED2 seemed like a pale reflection.

Also, I really don't like horror, so I wasn't the target audience for ED2 in all sorts of ways.

Old_Zircon - 2018-01-08

Evil Dead 2 is a straight up comedy and for me it's wittier and has better timing and takes more risks, but really everything Raimi touched up until Spiderman is pretty great. And that includes The Quick and the Dead.

Old_Zircon - 2018-01-08

It's really similar to comparing Dawn of the Dead vs. Day of the Dead, actually.

Whoah, are we saying ED1 is better than Army of Darkness now?

Film snob indeed!

For whatever reason --I was 14 as well so I didn't have much of an excuse -- I played through Duke3D before saw AoD, so I sort of thought it'd have more of the modern-times action, and not just one joke scene in the Smart Mart where he works. That little scene made me excited for the future of the series, but Drag Me to Hell did for the series just what it said on the tin :(

infinite zest - 2018-01-10

(Duke Nukem quotes AoD and They Live excessively, just in case any of y'all somehow didn't get my semi-logical connection of the two franchises)

chumbucket - 2018-01-08

I was very excited when this finally got released after seeing ED2 and saw it in the Drive-In. The end product was a bit of a let down but still very entertaining.

Happy to see a making of movie here! Thanks.

You're welcome.

The Mothership - 2018-01-09

I love this movie.
