One of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century.

Chicken the Did - 2017-11-29

The statue of limitations has long passed. The theory I read is that the individual or individuals do not come forward because they are oldschool sysadmin types. Wizard/hermit class. They do not want to be around people. They do not want to be around people constantly asking them about something that happened 30 years ago.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-11-29

Hey this is a huge jump in quality! In my opinion, a jump in quality of this magnitude for THIS kind of POE classic should NOT be considered a dupe.

Still, I would vote for this everyday, if someone chose to submit it. Why? Because I'm a patriot, goddamn it!

SolRo - 2017-11-30

I'd also believe it was an inside job by someone who was rather young at the time and still works in the industry and thus doesn't want to endanger their career.

or they were a wizard master S++ class hacker, and randomly died within a short timeframe as can randomly happen.

I'm going with dead. 30 years is a long time.

What is the upside to admitting that you were Max Headroom Perp? There's probably no money in it. If you've got some nice behind-the-scenes photos that crazy set, that might be worth a story, but you probably don't, since in the 80s most photography was still on film, so unless you had a darkroom, processing would be problematic, and there simply weren't as many pictures being taken back then.

There were actually at least two perps, and probably at least three. Assuming that they were under 35, they probably are still alive, but if you're over 60, and you've had any kind of a real life, you're just not that desperate for attention. They're probably somebody's Grandparents. It seems undignified to brag about the crime you got away with 30 years ago, especially because you would be called upon to provide some kind of proof. That would REALLY seem desperate.

And there's another wrinkle here, and that's the PATRIOT ACT. Some have described the Max Headroom incident as terrorism, and as stupid as that sounds, the PATRIOT ACT is said to define terrorism overly broadly. So, statute of limitations or no, I'd have to have a good reason to open myself up to a possibility of scrutiny and harassment, even if outright prosecution was off the table. And of course, this goes double for the current government.

I recently deleted my FaceBook account because I didn't want to be seen criticizing Trump with my real name. Nixon had 20 names on his famous enemies list. It Trump has an enemies list (it seems almost unlikely that he doesn't) it could contain terabytes of data.. Anyway, as we all know since the election, Facebook is to be avoided, like the wretched hive of scum and villainy that it is.

you wouldn't get in trouble under the patriot act.

laws don't work retroactively.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2021-08-28

Okay, I'm writing this years later, but my understanding of the Patriot Act is that it's not a law about crimes and penalties, it's about data collection, so there could still be consequences, not only for the perps, but for friends and relatives.

SUCK IT, GUY FAWKES!

memedumpster - 2017-11-29

For real, even Coca Cola's marketing couldn't dent Max Headroom's counter-culture social uprising street cred. All it took to kill Guy Fawkes was one awful movie and a bunch of dumb white kids.

Old_Zircon - 2017-11-29

Been after one of these masks for years, but the only one I ever found was over $200 and fuck that.

memedumpster - 2017-11-29

That is a lot of money to dress up like Leela from Doctor Who.

Juice Eggs McKenna - 2017-11-30

It was worth every penny meme. See my insta for details.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2017-11-29

Wow, I had no idea a copy of this quality existed.

Old_Zircon - 2017-11-30

Pretty sure this is just the old version with the audio cleaned up using modern noise reduction. The picture is still pretty overcompressed, I'd love to see a nice, high bitrate, higher resolution transfer of the tape. VHS is nominally 480p but that's not actually a high enough resolution to capture it well, especially after you account for the resolution lost from deinterlacing.

What I'm saying is, I just can't jerk it to this.

garcet71283 - 2017-11-30

Funny you say that. I just picked up a new, in shrink copy of Dune from my local thrift store (1990 edition) and sure enough, quality looks like the used videos from this time period.

I don't think we are ever going to get a proper quality cut of this, since the recording technology was so shitty at this time.
