I have a copy of that exact Terminator 2: Judgment Day VHS tape but I got it new. It was "priced to own", becoming more common in the early 1990s but hardly guaranteed in an era where the majority of movies, when released on VHS, were still "priced to rent" (usually in the ~$100-150 U.S. range IIRC).

I guess the frequently-pausing "Dad" doesn't care about wearing out his tape prematurely with all of the pausing and unpausing and short rewinds. Laserdisc did exist for people who wanted crystal clear freeze frames (at least if they bought the pricier CAV LD versions of films) without damaging their copy of the film but I guess this promo is selling mainly to smaller mom & pop video stores who may not have offered Laserdisc rentals so the existence of LD wasn't even brought up.

Come to think of it, even though the box is identical as far as I can tell, maybe it's not *exactly* the same as the rental copy since, as far as I can remember, it didn't have the scene with the pausing father at the beginning as it's the priced-to-own version, although I haven't actually watched that VHS tape since the late 1990s due to having bought the movie again on DVD (twice) and then Blu-Ray.

Of anything I could've taken away from Brett Easton Ellis' apocryphal tale "Less Than Zero," it's that rich dicks have regular access to $100 VHS tapes that were always rented/stolen from the video store.
