In the current wolfenstein universe, is hitler still alive?

I'd certainly like a shot of killing him in this game series.

GQ - 2017-08-04

There are mentions of him being still alive

fedex - 2017-08-04

He has orange hair

Hooker - 2017-08-03

Can they not make the Wolfenstein game and just make this show instead?

The Mothership - 2017-08-04

It would get old really fast, but it would be a lot of fun to make.

Cena_mark - 2017-08-04

Mensch is a Yiddish word. I don't think the Nazis would give their hero a Yiddish name.

GQ - 2017-08-04

It's also a German word, meaning man. As in the Übermensch, which was a BIG part of the Nazi philosophy

Q: What kind of Jew is a Nazi?

A: An ASHKE-NAZI!

As Jews started migrating into Europe, a lot of them settled them into the territory of the Holy Roman Empire, what is now Germany. The Jews in question were known as the Ashkenazi Jews, and they developed a language that was an amalgam of Hebrew, German, Slavic tongues, and probably Pig Latin just to make things interesting. That language is known as "Yiddish", which is basically the modern German word "Jüdisch" meaning "Jewish". So you're going to see a lot of overlap between German and Yiddish.

It's common in Yiddish for "schmuck" to be an insult meaning "penis", but in German "Schmuck" means treasure. The Germans got one look at what the Jews were doing to themselves and said "good God no, you can't pay me enough". (Not a trustworthy etymology.)

Bort - 2017-08-04

... it occurs to me that the English language went through a process similar to that of Yiddish. Prior to 1066, English was the basically unsullied language of the Anglo-Saxons. Then the French came rolling in, and a shit-ton of French vocabulary (and a certain amount of Latin) got infused into English.

The difference, I think, is that the Ashkenazi Jews kinda-sorta adopted the local language (German) but then incorporated vocabulary from other languages, rather than starting with Hebrew and incorporating German.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-08-04

It happens. Just look at your grocery store and notice how the animal's name is Anglo-Saxon when it's alive and French when it's ready to cook.

Cena_mark - 2017-08-04

Except for chicken. We have the word poultry, but most folks in the US just refer to the meat as chicken.

If I recall Hitler referred to the "Ubermensch", directly referencing Nietzsche, and is one of those famous examples of misappropriation Deconstructionalists like to throw around, since his overall interpretation of the Philosopher's words was so off-base that it spawned its own philosophical subgenre to figure out how and why. It's kinda like exactly what's going on right now with the definition of "American." So basically Hitler was too dumb to even know what y'all are talking about and every one of his "Keep Germany Great Again" fans were either too drunk or eventually too scared to call him out on it.

The more I think about it, the more I really want to get this and the other Wolfensteins I missed in the last 25 years. I loved Duke3D, but even at 14 I had basically outgrown the need for tits and swears in games or mainstream movies, and spent nearly all of my time making my own levels, something of a holdover from what I did with Wolfedit before it. And where Duke Forever failed by holding on to the things that were zeitgeisty and edgy 12 years before it, Wolfenstein's still cool because it's basically a continuation of the modding community's inherent zaniness which is something that Bethesda encourages in the first place.

Louddetective - 2017-08-04

I recently played through the most recent one, Wolfenstein: The New Order, and it was pretty goddamn fun. It's a game that says, "we know Nazis need to get killed, and we know you want to kill Nazis, now more than ever. We're going to make this as enjoyable as possible for you, because hey: fuck Nazis." Any other game I would not feel very good about so gleefully stabbing and shooting the absolute shit out of human enemies, but in Wolf, every single time it makes me go, "take that, you Nazi piece of shit."

Also, the leaning mechanics were surprisingly good.

Yeah.. I kinda wanted to mention it in that batshit Death Wish video that I really enjoyed Eli Roth in "Inglorious Basterds" for that very reason, not that he directed it or anything. His brand of horror/murder-porn is just fine with me when applied to Nazis or any who practice National Socialism. And I've watched many a clip from New Order and see a similar "Grindhouse" aesthetic, which is only mildly irritation for me because something digital like a game wouldn't have the same kind of decay as seen on cheap film stock which allows for the aesthetic in the first place.. but it looks good.

SolRo - 2017-08-04

The new games certainly do a good job of reminding you why murdering (or even just punching) Nazis is Okay.

Instead of just shooting Male_Soldier_Modelt_01 with SS_Soldier_Texture_07, they give you the back story of how they're terrible human beings worthy of your murder simulator hijinks.

Gmork - 2017-08-04

You're going to enjoy The New Order if you get it, Zest. And The Old Blood. Get both on sale. The Old Blood has some pretty sweet levels, don't pass it up in a bundle.

Gmork - 2017-08-04

Also that's cool that you made levels for games. That's how I got my start. You can still find all my Marathon levels on the marathon.bungie.org level archives.

boner - 2017-08-05

I just played it, yeah it's fun, entirely tasteless but you don't care because it's Nazis.

infinite zest - 2017-08-05

Word I'm excited to finally try them out. It's only been a little less than a year that I've had a PC capable of current-gen games, so I've kinda been focusing on the eye candy more than quality of single-player PC games, since I still spend 90% of my gaming time with TF2 or Overwatch regardless. And while Bethesda did a bang-up job with DOOM, it was kind of how I felt with the original DOOM some 20 years ago. It's fun, but now that the MFPS crown has been taken away from it (if DOOM ever had the crown in the first place sheerly out of lack of 56k-era competition) I felt left with a very hollow and lonely-feeling first-person game, something I never felt when I replayed Wolf3D or Spear of Destiny.
